CNET Editors' Take

Review: Four megapixels don't come any cheaper than this. This midrange entry in Gateway's new digital camera line puts high resolution in a basic point-and-shoot, appealing to photographers who like easy camera operation and big prints.

Upside: While it doesn't offer a very advanced feature set, the M40 covers the basics well, with a 3X zoom lens, exposure compensation, white-balance presets, and shutter speeds from 2 seconds to 1/2,000 second. You can shoot 320x240 video clips with sound and record voice memos with this model too.

Downside: Although Gateway throws in an adequately large (for a budget camera) 32MB CompactFlash card to get you started shooting, you'll have to spring for your own rechargeable batteries; only AA alkalines are included. We also wish that the M40's light-sensitivity selections went below ISO 200.

Outlook: This camera has the potential--if its image quality and performance are decent--to be the best value for snapshot photographers in Gateway's first batch of digital cameras. It's currently the least-expensive 4-megapixel digicam on the market at $200 (list price). Hide Review

Pros: Great detail in pictures, look just like film

Cons: too long to save and reload

Summary: This camera is great for those that take a few pictures and want great quality, the pictures that I send to get printed look like they were taken on film. But, I have children and they move fast; this camera is not good for me because it takes too long ... Expand full review
