"Not the quality I expected from Kodak!"
Pros: Easy share and instant pictures using the supplied printer dock.
Cons: Dark and grainy pictures at indoor events over 15 feet. Doesnt hold settings.
Summary: For starters, I was very disappointed with this camera. I purchased this camera as a birthday present for my wife who isnt very camera savy. She prefers an easy to use, Point & Shoot camera, that does not need to be programmed. I thought this camera would be the perfect choice for her.
I have personally been in photography for many years. I used to be a portrait photographer, ran a photolab for many years and sold cameras and photographic accessories for major retail companies. I used to push the Kodak cameras for the "auto" feature, point & shoot simplicity and the docking feature to give you prints in a matter of seconds.
But..after using this camera at my son's Boy Scout ceremony, I was ashamed that I gave this camera as a gift. I sat in a gymnasium approximately 35 feet from the "subject". The room was brightly lit from the natural lighting from the large windows and the overhead flourescent lighting. The image screen showed a brightly lit subject. The camera was set on "auto flash" with the shooting mode in "auto". The camera took a few seconds to focus before the shot was ready, then chose a slow shutter speed which produced a very dark image. It was nearly impossible to make out who the people were in the picture. I know that you must increase the exposure when zooming and in low light conditions, so for the next shot, I chose a +2.0 over exposure, changed to a center focus mode so that it wouldnt take too long to focus. Again, the camera took a long time to "auto focus" and then chose a slow shutter speed, producing another dark photo. While another event happened, I tried to snap a picture but the moment was already gone before the camera was ready.
I had to physically program each shot using the differant SCN modes in order to get a fair picture.
Another problem, the automatic shut down mode to save your battery during a long pause, also resets your shooting mode back to what Kodak decided is the default mode. When you turn on the camera, you have to reset the exposure setting, if it is too dark to use the "auto" setting, (for every shot). I shot these pictures at the highest MP setting the camera allowd. And still had dark grainy photos.
My Samsung 5MP camera takes better photos set at 2MP, than this Kodak did at 6MP. I wish I had taken my auto point & shoot Samsung. Even my old fashion manual 35mm, with a large zoom, would have produced brighter pictures faster than this camera.
My opinion of this camera? Dont buy it for a point & shoot camera if you intend to use it indoors at churchs, auditoriums, concerts, games, etc. You need slow motion events and staged subject matter if you dont want to lose the moment. Even if your subject is only 10-15 feet away, (the normal flash zone), the indoor shots are grainy. This is not the quality I expected from Kodak.
I will write to Kodak and complain. If they find it is a defective camera and replace it, and the results are better, I will come back to rewrite another review. Otherwise, this camera may be heading back to the place where I bought it and we will choose a differant brand.
