Priced only $50 more than its 4-megapixel sibling, the LS743, the Kodak EasyShare LS753 is easily worth the extra cash. Your half-Benjamin buys you twice as much internal memory (32MB), a 5-megapixel sensor, and four additional scene modes. This camera is also an upgrade from the similarly spec'd but slightly lower-priced Kodak CX7530, thanks to a sleeker 4.3-by-1.2-by-1.9-inch, 6.4-ounce all-metal body that's easier to tuck in a pocket and a long-lived rechargeable battery that hung in for 872 shots--50 percent of them with flash--on a single charge. The chief downside is a 2.8X zoom lens with a 36mm-to-100mm (35mm equivalent) range that's better suited for framing adjustments than changing perspective.

With its elongated layout, the LS753 fits two hands better than one, especially if you want to thumb the back-mounted zoom lever while keeping a finger poised over the shutter release. Also nestled on the top surface are the power button (which glows an eerie blue when the camera is switched on), slits for the built-in speaker, a flash adjustment button, and a jog wheel that you turn to switch among shooting and scene modes, then depress to lock in the mode. These modes include Auto, Portrait, Self-Portrait, Night Portrait, Close-Up, Landscape, Night Landscape, Sport, Snow, Beach, Party, Fireworks, Backlight, Children, Flower, and a "politeness" mode labeled Museum/Manner that deactivates the flash and camera sounds in environments where flash photography is prohibited or frowned upon.

Other than the four-way cursor/OK button nested within the zoom lever's collar, the only controls to fuss with are the Delete, Menu, Review, and Share (tag, print, e-mail) buttons located to the left of the 1.8-inch LCD. Unfortunately, some key options, including exposure compensation, burst mode, and the self-timer, are buried in the menu system, along with less-frequently accessed controls such as white balance; ISO speed; multi- or center-zone autofocus; and multi-, center-weighted, or spot metering. While the camera sets sensitivity within only the ISO 80 to ISO 160 range in full auto, you can specify manual ISO settings up to ISO 800, although the highest setting is available solely in the 1.7-megapixel Good mode. These adjustments all return to their defaults when the camera is powered down, so you may visit the menus more often than expected.

Close-up shooting capabilities are extremely good. The LS753 focuses down to 2 inches in wide-angle mode and as close as a foot at the modest telephoto setting. Burst mode is equally impressive; the Kodak grabbed four shots in about 1.2 seconds. A few features are notable chiefly for their fun factor and their convenience. For example, the LS753 can automatically rotate vertically oriented photos for viewing when the camera is held horizontally and, at the same time, embed this orientation information in the file for the benefit of image software that can use it. The Share button makes it easy to tag images for an in-camera photo album or mark them for e-mailing to any of 32 e-mail addresses you've downloaded to the camera from your computer using the included EasyShare software. Less fun are the movie capabilities, which are limited to 640x480 pixels at 13fps or 320x240 pixels at 20fps, up to the capacity of the 32MB of internal flash memory or your SD card.

The LS753's performance is always at your fingertips because the camera is always ready to take a picture when powered up, even if you're navigating a menu or reviewing your previous shots. You don't waste a lot of time with shutter lag, which amounted to only 0.6 second under high-contrast lighting and a respectable 0.9 second under more challenging low-contrast illumination. Even with burst mode switched off, you'll wait only 1.4 seconds between shots (or 2.4 seconds with flash) until the roughly four-shot buffer fills.

The LS753 had some fringing on high-contrast edges (left), and the focal point of our test photo wasn't sharply in focus (right).

Image quality was generally good but suffered from purple fringing around many backlit subjects. Exposures were solid, with lots of detail in shadows and highlights, while colors, especially flesh tones, were realistic with the right amount of saturation. However, the images were much softer than we expected from a 5-megapixel camera, and there were lots of JPEG artifacts to be found. The camera's default ISO 80 to ISO 160 sensitivity settings produced little noise, but this grainy effect was quite visible at ISO 400 and above.

Real 5MP camera with a very acceptable price

Pros: low price, good picture quality, really easy to use, small body

Cons: Doesn't support low quality picture(<1.7MP), zoom indicator is not easy to control

Review: I used to own a Casio Z40, I sell that because a low quality picture and get this one. The LS753 has a small body and light wight. I like the jog dial design of this camera, it is pretty special and easy to use. The only shortage of this DC is that the lowest quality picture it can take is 1.7 MP (1496*1122) with a file size around 500k, So if you want take more picture you need a big SD card. If you want a camera with good picture quality, good looking, small body, easy to use and with a acceptable price, this is your choice.

Great camera

Pros: small size, easy to use, low price, 5 megapixels

Cons: nothing yet

Great little camera for pounding around

Pros: Small size, great photos, good battery life

Cons: small size can lead to missing shots.

Review: I have had a Canon G1 for, well, ever. One faithful day I dropped it and dented the darn thing. It would still turn on but it wouldn't read compact flash cards anymore. So, I needed a new camera.

I have always been a canon guy, so I went to the local photo shop expecting to buy their latest and greatest small camera.

When I was looking at the case, I noticed a sale. A Kodak 5 megapixel camera for $199.

I have had this camera two weeks and so far it takes excellent pictures. The small size has allowed me to pop it into my pocket and take it places I normally wouldn't have lugged my big Canon Digital Rebel to.

At a recent company picnic I ran that camera through it's paces and overall it did well. I got some portraits, some action shots and some scenery shots that all turned out very adequate. Overall, I am very happy with this camera.

I would suggest to get a larger SD card. I got a one gig one and I still was not up to the pricepoint I would have been for a Canon digital.

So far, so good. Great little camera!

Glowing review of the LS753

Pros: Ease of use, sharp, quality pictures, great value

Cons: Battery life

Review: Hands down, this is the best 5MP digital camera for the following reasons:

1 – Extremely user-friendly navigational tools and controls
2 – Beautiful, sharp and poignant pictures
3 – Sleek, compact and sexy metal design
4 – Tons of features and settings for different picture-taking modes
5 – No disparity in quality when uploading to image-hosting sites and digital labs
6 – Compatibility with Kodak printer docks, which are sold in every major electronics retail store
7 – Exceptional close ups
8 – Affordable and reasonable price for a 5MP

The only gripe that I have about this camera is that the battery life is horrid. More than likely it’s me, because the editor’s review on cnet as well as user reviews have all applauded the LS753’s battery life as being excellent. The circular okay button is sensitive, so less graceful photographers may get frustrated. Can I just say how easy and simple this camera is? I tinkered around with a Sony Cybershot, a Canon and a Fuji and found one major item in common: complex user interface. I don’t know about you, but having to pour through a user manual to decipher a camera’s basic functions sounds like a major production. The LS753’s functions and controls are explicitly labeled and positioned, so taking pictures is effortless. A bit of advice: don’t waste your money on a 256 MB card. Get at least a 512. The whole reason why you purchase a 5MP over a 4 is to utilize that extra megapixel of output. A 256 card will get around 150 5MP shots; a 512 gets around 300.

Excellent Camera For Any User

Pros: Easy To Use, Intuitive, Surprisingly good Video,Long Battery Life

Cons: Small LCD, EasyShare Software not great for editing capability

Review: My first digital camera. Read tons of CNET reviews and lots of web research. What nailed me was the ease of use. Right out of the box, without ever using a digicam before, got great pictures. For those who like to do a lot of photo fixing, you'll need a better editor (I use MS PictureIt 10)... a lot of features for a very small price (got mine at a wh club for $225, included dock, etc.) No regrets.

Superb camera for taking great pictures without hassles

Pros: Excellent picture quality and very easy to use

Cons: Battery cover looks a little flimsy, resets setting after shutdown

Review: I have had a Canon A75 before and although it was a real good camera this Kodak blows it away. After I lost my Canon I went to Circuit city to buy a camera for about $250 expecting to get a decent 4MP but I was shocked to find this 5MP Kodak on sale for $190. At that price I though there must be some serious flaw with this camera, but after doing some research online I went ahead and bought the camera.

I looked past CNETs bad review of the user interface of this camera when buying it. It is really not that hard to use as the cnet review might make you think. I found the interface to be very intuitive. The OK button might mess you up a bit once or twice but not enough to hate this camera.

The picture quality of this camera is sensational. Using the Auto setting for the camera I am taking excellent pictures. The movies are fairly nice as well with sound and decent quality. I wish the output format was avi, but this camera uses the quicktime mov format.

This camera doesnt have a whole lot of manual settings that the Canon A75 had, but I almost never used the manual settings anyway.

One thing that I dont like is that most picture related settings you change are not stored after you turn off the camera. The camera defaults to Auto after shutdown. So if you have a custom group of settings for taking pictures then this camera is probably not for you.

I wanted a camera that would take good pictures without me having to tinker with a whole lot of settings and this camera fits the bill perfectly and if you are looking for a camera with similar criteria look nowhere else.

Easy to use and takes great pictures!

Pros: This camera is extremely easy to use and has good picture quality. I like the fact that I can store almost 300 pictures on a 256Mb memory card.

Cons: One thing that is extremely annoying is that the "OK" button is poorly designed. Another thing is that there is no option to turn off the digital zoom.

Review: I think this is a really good camera that is definitely worth buying if you want something that is easy but doesn't compromise quality.
