"Great point and shoot camera for the true amateur"
Pros: Intuitive controls, pocket portable, good results using available light
Cons: Price, price, price
Summary: Caveat: I'm an amateur photographer and I've had this camera only since mid July 2005. My other dc's are a Nikon Cool-Pix 995 (still does a great job) and a Nikon D-70.
I use the Kodak V550 for walking around shots, mainly outdoor photography, mostly landscapes, and for interiors using available light--museum and gallery settings (no flash allowed). It does well with both venues. Photos look realistic both on the computer screen and as prints. Colors are true. The LCD is easily viewed even in the mid-day NM sun. And it has a reasonable viewfinder. It is lightweight and fits my pocket easily. (I'm using a PDA case to protect the camera/LCD.) I've dropped it twice with no ill effects. I have arthritic fingers and large hands for a woman, but am well able to use the buttons. A firm two handed hold is feasible because there is enough room on the left to grip the camera w/o interfering with the lens.
The camera comes with an easy to read/use printed manual.
I haven't noticed noise, artifacts, purple fringing but am not certain I would recognize them if they were there. Since I take only 10-20 pictures on a daily basis, I haven't had a problem with the battery. Haven't tried the video yet, so can't comment on it.
I could wish for 4-5x optical and for faster access to the ISO and light balance settings. Nevertheless, the camera is just about perfect for my purposes.

My sister is a photographer and she started of with some thing like a Kodak 5 MP EasyShare Z740 Digital Camera w/ 10x Optical Zoom, except that her camera was worth about 6 times more than that. But she used something of that sort. This camera is also pretty cheap but if you're an amateur photographer I would suggest a camera that is bigger than a v550. just suggesting :-D
