"Good Picture over all picture quality, but has a flimsy feel to it." on by uhoroj

    Pros: Picture quality, LCD

Cons: Placement of buttons, Battery door, feels flimsy

Summary: I bought this camera after reading the readers reviews of the product here on Cnet.com. I agree the photo quality is good. I have not notice any fringing, or yellowish hue in any pictures as of yet. The 12x Optical zoom seems quiet enough and the focusing speed is fair or on par with Canon’s PowerShot S2 IS. The 2.5 inch LCD’s brightness adjusts quickly to changing lighting conditions making in viewable in almost any situation. The image stabilization works well under about 7x optical zoom anything further out is pretty shaky.

The things I don’t like? The sliding door covering the battery and memory card has no latch; it does slide away under normal picture taking conditions. This isn’t a problem while the camera is new (the battery does not fall out easily), but probably will be a problem with a little wear (given, you will be taking the battery out often to recharge it).

I differ from reviewer’s opinion on how well the finish will wear. Having worked in consumer electronic repairs for some time now. I find the gloss plastic coating as this one is to be prone to wearing off fast and the chrome coating over the buttons to crack easily.

It took some time to get use to finding and pressing the shutter button. Given it mounts flush with the top of the camera.

The lens cap falls off easily.

Overall I like the z612 performance. I don’t like parts of the housing design and the flimsy feel to the camera.

Rating of 6 was kind of low when your complaints center around:

the battery door: there's a battery holder latch inside to hold the battery in place so you don't need a heavy duty cover, there's no pressure on it.

lens cap falls off: that's common with all the superzooms that's why they gave you a tether string.

flimsy feel: Kodak has gone out of their way to produce a light easy to carry camera. Compare the size, weight to the Canon s3 IS and you'll appreciate the portability part. And the Canon has rubber flaps covering some of their connections too. And it's $200.00 more.

I am ordering # 4 now. The last camera a Kodak DX4530 is 3 years old and the battery cover is solid, the lens cap is annoying but all brands of longer zoom cameras seem to have one too.
