"Kodak packs a punch!" on by HolyMacro
Pros: EVERYTHING
Cons: Chintzy lens cap (a minor detail)
Batteries take a long time to recharge (buy spare ones to solve this problem)Summary: Kodak digital cameras have to be the most UNDERRATED cameras in the world!
(I purchased this Z980 because of the outstanding performance of my older Kodak digital camera [it's only 6 MP and 10x zoom]. It's excellent also; even after using it for years and taking thousands of pictures. BTW, it's still going strong).
I've tried various SLRs. I've tried the Pentax 24x zoom, and I've tried the Nikon 24x zoom. The photos don't even come close to being as good as with this Kodak Z980 camera.
The vibrant color this camera produces is stunning! The sharpness and clarity is due to the wonderful 12 MP (you can actually see tiny pollen on a leaf). The long zoom focuses perfectly whether you're in Auto mode or Manual mode (or anywhere in between). And the Macro mode has 2 versions: regular Macro and Macro+. With Macro+ you can, literally, get the lens within 1" of the subject and it takes a perfect photo.
Who needs to spend $1000 or more on a SLR when you have the Z980?!? The lens is every bit as good as an Nikkor. Don't shy away from this camera because it's a "point and shoot". This baby takes better photos than any other camera I've seen or experienced. And it's user-friendly to boot.
I'm a photo enthusiast and amateur; and I've been taking photos all my life with all sorts of cameras and this one--without a doubt--is the best camera I have ever used.
I shot 200 photos yesterday (experimenting with all the still modes). I didn't have a bad one in the bunch. Close-ups and 24x shots came out perfectly. The same batteries lasted throughout the 200 pictures with plenty of power left over. The camera shoots fast. Its depth of field is right on. All the settings are right on.
I haven't used the video mode yet but it records in HD! I'm really looking forward to seeing the camera's capability.
I cannot say one single bad thing about the Z980! It's everything I was expecting and more! -
"Great camera! But has some notable annoyances." on by Irishkeepgatecrashing
Pros: -Awesome LCD screen
-Captures image color vividly
-Great zoom
-Love the scene settings
-Battery life is really great
-LOVE the viewfinderCons: -Focusing has been an issue. YES you can zoom, but getting it to focus can be tricky.
-There is definitely noise in a lot of images.
-Lens cap is the worst I've ever seen (but this is pretty minor).Summary: I LOVE this camera! I take it with me to most places and have taken thousands of pictures since I got it for Christmas. My favorite thing about this camera is its scene settings which include settings for flowers, sunsets, candlelight, and the beach. It's really awesome. The zoom is really great as well, although as I mentioned above, focusing is a constant annoyance with this camera. It's just tricky getting that little green box to appear! The second most annoying thing about this camera is the noise in some images. I've found with average, good lighting it takes great pictures with little to no noise. But some inside shots where I would like the lighting to be natural and without a flash (say an open window, or simply not bright overhead lighting) there is a lot of noise. Other than using flash (which sort of ruins the light) I haven't found a way to make it go away. The lens cap is a joke. Pretty much a couple days after I got my camera it was already broken. It just have to pay attention to the lens more, seeing as how the lens cap is almost never on it.
Overall, this is a really awesome camera for what you pay! It takes way better pictures than most average digital cameras. But if you want amazing, clear crisp quality get an SLR. If you want a camera for everyday kind of shooting, you can't go wrong with this Kodak. -
"Kodak's entry into the "almost DSLR" circle" on by revjanarthur
Pros: I like the fact that I can zoom in closely on my family and my kid's sporting events with this camera. The LCD screen is like HD quality and clarity. The pictures are sharp, accurate color-wise, and the HD video capture and playback are great!
Cons: Feels light and a bit cheap. I worry that if I dropped the thing it would ruin it. I'm very protective of it and plan to get a good case to travel with. There seems to be a bit of a lag-time when pressing the button and getting the picture.
Summary: I'm new to this camera thing - always used a pocket style digital camera or the poor phone cameras. This thing makes me feel like I've really got a tool or a weapon to use to go to the next level with picture taking. It's not the best out there, but it's an affordable entry into the world of high resolution (12 megapixels) and 24X zoom power. I just hope this lasts our family for 5-10 years. We've had poor experiences with the mini-Sony camera's and a little Konica-Minolta and even shutter issues with the Canon's...I like the fact that Kodak is an American company and they're not content to be the poor old brother who's a step behind. This is a user-friendly, high powered camera and I look forward to it. I'll write another review in about a year to let you guys know how it's been.

"MUCH better than some DSLR" on by universeexplorer
Pros: ALMOST EVERYTHING
Cons: Absence of Manual white balance (can be done later with photoscape which is freeware)
Power hungry (well i like that)
Wants you to understand it (So?)Summary: No question. this is the best camera out there, even better than the olympus 26x thing. I find everything in this camera useful. While some people claim that the secondary shutter button does not help, i can't resist saying that it saved my life at moments.
I am a nature photographer. I find everything works perfectly in harmony for this camera.
The Macro + mode lets you to go till 1" of your target
The 16 second exposure works in clear skys well enough to capture saturn WITHOUT a telescope.
If you are interested in quirky portraits, you will find why the second shutter is a huge help
The video mode has continuous autofocus.
There is not much difference between 12 and 10.7 MP modes
Kodak is truly an underrateed camera. I find no difference between this and a digital rebel. I do not find to much noise in this cam, and when I decrease the size of the picture from 3000x 4000 to 1280 x 768 --- they are gone.
The flash works well enough.
The camera is often faster than I expect.

"Great camera" on by SAA999
Pros: Takes great shots. Uses AA batteries
Cons: Can't zoom in or out while in video mode
Summary: I have taken some outstanding photos with this camera. Colors are very rich and vivid. Even when zoomed in on a distant subject the photos are clear and I see very little if any noise in them.
Video is good. The thing I don't like about it is you don't have the ability to zoom in or out while the video is recording. Also once you have a focus lock you can't change the photos zoom either without letting your finger off the focus button.
This is a great camera that takes really good shots and allows you to really zoom in on your subject matter.
The only way I would buy a new amateur camera is if it had the same quality of photos and had an enhanced zoom (maybe something like 30X), other than that this is the camera I am going to have for a long time.
