"good but complicated for a "point and shoot""
Pros: if you get the shot right, you're psyched--great quality
Cons: you may have to take 5 shots to get a decent one of whatever you're shooting
Summary: I bought the 4800 for $400 a couple months ago. I have 2+ years of mid-level digital camera experience: the bottom line is that it took me 2 months just to learn the basics of using this camera. I still try 2-3 settings for every shot just to make sure I get it right.
For $400, you should be able to get an easy to use camera with the 4800's features for at least $100 less.
But as I said, if you get the shot right, you're psyched. I take a lot of outdoor shots and the 8x optical zoom is awesome. Though, you need a tripod to fully utilize the zoom.
I took a zoomed-in picture of the fullmoon the other night and it came out great.
