"Great results but some minor issues" on by agimpels
Pros: Great feel, pictures and intuitive controls
Cons: Slow writing and focus. Mode control too easily disturbed
Summary: I just spent two weeks with the camera on a Caribbean cruise shooting over 900 pictures. The results were good to great. The FUNC(tion) button is a very handy, programmable tool allowing rapid changes in settings. The downside is that the shot-to-shot speed at highest resolution was slow. I shut off review to speed things up. Low light focus not totally reliable but as the focus control is readily available, it was easy to compensate. Also, the camera strap kept changing the mode selector.
I used it mostly on the Aperature priority mode at ISO 100 only because this is my favorite mode. In automatic ISO and exposure the results were still good. It has a very good, solid feel, especially with the optional battery pack. The battery pack makes portrait pictures easier with the zoom and trigger easily available on it rather than the camera body. Make sure you lock the trigger on the pack when not using it as it is very easy to activate. Did get about 200 pictures with the pack and/or the internal with about 30% of them flash. Tried all of the modes with good to excellent results. The manual is reasonably good also.
Overall, a lot of camera to learn in the two days I had before we left. Having been a serious amateur photographer for many years I am usually overly critical of equipment and my own pictures. Not so in this case. I am well satisfied with the camera, technology and the results. -
"Best of my 13 cameras" on by canuck589
Pros: Stunning image quality, vibration reduction a joy!
Cons: Swing-away picture window is somewhat awkward
Summary: I bought my 8800 along with a 2gb Scancard and installed the latest software from Nikon's site on my Win2K sytem and was almost stunned by the clarity, sharpness and depth of the first shots. These images rival the quality of my favorite slides scanned with a Nikon LS-2000, and I'm amazed how well the vibration-reduction works at improving sharpness in telephoto shots. When I pulled up my first shots in the Picture Project window, I could only whistle and say "Wow!" several times, then view them all. Each and every one was perfectly sharp, showed no loss in image quality anywhere (from center to edge to corners) and the resolution was simply incredible!
I find the camera easy to use and focus, and tend to use the viewfinder instead of the swing-away picture window. Although I can see the utility of the latter, I'm too old to change my ways after more than 40 years in photography and prefer to focus the old-fashioned way. This is my only criticism of this fine camera, by the way: the viewfinder is not as bright as in my other Nikons.
Besides the excellent lens & VR system, I also appreciate the flash shoe to hold a more powerful flash unit, and the long-life battery. Over 240 8mb shots on the initial charge (but I'm shopping for another battery just to be safe.)
Great price, great lens, excellent value. Nikon has a winner in this model! -
"Focus anyone?" on
Pros: Good build quality, nice lens
Cons: Poor AF system blows focus, slow write times, weak AF assist light, horrible manual focus and poor performance all around at the price.

"Next best thing to digital SLR" on by sjddmd
Pros: Incredible images, colors and clarity rival my NikonD100, easy to use, Great pop up flash, Vibration reduction outstanding, excellent value
Cons: difficulty with focusing in very dark lighting
Summary: Have had a passion for photography for over 20 years now. I have owned a few 35mm SLR's and a Nikon D100 Digital SLR. Moved up from the Coolpix 5700 to the 8800 this year. What a phenomenal camera ! First of all it takes images that are close but not quite as sharp as the D100, which costs twice as much. EVF allows TTL viewing and is excellent quality image- it brightens in dark lighting and is very clear. This camera will satisfy all camera afficionados- especially those that prefer to set their own F stop/ Shutter speeds, but has plenty of auto setting also. Have used it at a wedding recently and to shoot action shots at a local baseball game (shutter speed 1000-1500 of a second with 10 X Optical zoom and Vibration Reduction). This is like a mini SLR- smaller and lighter than your typical digital SLR, but gives you images that rival many digital SLR's- for about half the cost- could easily be picked up on web for $500-600. You will definitely be pleased. Only drawback is a little slow to write to CF card- but Nikon is supposedly coming out with firmware update to speed this up- afterall- you are writing 8 meg size images so it has to be a little slower than your typical 4-5 meg camera. Takes about 2-3 seconds usually to write 8 meg size Xtra Fine JPG images to CF card. Much improved battery life- Shot over 200 pics at a wedding last weekend - many with flash and battery still had 2 bars. Nothing in this class can match these features and these images.

"Great Prosumer Camera - combines many SLR features in 1 comact unit." on by sizlin
Pros: Selection Wheel, 10X Optical Zoom, vibration reduction, improved battery life.
Cons: larger and heavier that previous models
Summary: I love this camera! The addition of the selection wheel for access to the many features this camera has was a definately a plus for me. The wheel eliminates the buttons that were located in the lens barrels of the 5700 and 8700 coolpix models. The Vibration reduction option really makes it easier to use the digital zoom. The battery life has been greatly improved over the 5700 and 8700 coolpix models. The 10x optical zoom is the icing on the cake. After using the 8800 for a few months I have decided to sell my old heavy SLR and the lenses that go with it. Over all the coolpix 8800 is a great improvement over the Cooolpix 8700 model.
