"Best of my 13 cameras"
Pros: Stunning image quality, vibration reduction a joy!
Cons: Swing-away picture window is somewhat awkward
Summary: I bought my 8800 along with a 2gb Scancard and installed the latest software from Nikon's site on my Win2K sytem and was almost stunned by the clarity, sharpness and depth of the first shots. These images rival the quality of my favorite slides scanned with a Nikon LS-2000, and I'm amazed how well the vibration-reduction works at improving sharpness in telephoto shots. When I pulled up my first shots in the Picture Project window, I could only whistle and say "Wow!" several times, then view them all. Each and every one was perfectly sharp, showed no loss in image quality anywhere (from center to edge to corners) and the resolution was simply incredible!
I find the camera easy to use and focus, and tend to use the viewfinder instead of the swing-away picture window. Although I can see the utility of the latter, I'm too old to change my ways after more than 40 years in photography and prefer to focus the old-fashioned way. This is my only criticism of this fine camera, by the way: the viewfinder is not as bright as in my other Nikons.
Besides the excellent lens & VR system, I also appreciate the flash shoe to hold a more powerful flash unit, and the long-life battery. Over 240 8mb shots on the initial charge (but I'm shopping for another battery just to be safe.)
Great price, great lens, excellent value. Nikon has a winner in this model!
