"Good / Inexpensive but not Fast." on by cmr164
Pros: Quality JPEGs in the top two modes Excellent movies. Lots of Menu choices.
Cons: Shutter Lag can be extreme, chooses flash too often on automatic. Too many menu options can be confusing
Summary: I picked up this L3 with 2 sets of batteries and an included charger, and a 256M SD card for USD $219 in Singapore which is pretty much the same as discount mail order US prices. I got a white one and my buddy got a silver brushed metal one at the same time. As a longtime user of top end pro dSLR cameras the shutter lag is truely annoying but the L3 fits a shirt pocket and is a good compromise on price/function/size.

"Nice Little Camera from Nikon" on by DaveMcLain
Pros: Small, nice picture quality, easy to use.
Cons: A little slow, limited onboard memory
Summary: I bought this camera about 2 months ago to take on a vacation to Europe and also for general use. Very nice quality pictures with good color. I've fitted the camera with a 2GB SD memory card and it can store about 2000 pictures or 1/2 hour of TV quality video. It's easy to carry around and while somewhat limited it does shoot useable video with VERY good sound quality, amazing for a camera of this size and price.
5.1 meg pixel but I tend to use 3 mega pixel size for just about everything because the quality is nice and the pictures are not too large.
No overabundance of features and that's really not a bad thing because the camera is easy to use right out of the box.
An excellent valve. -
"Awesome, awesome and awesome" on by danleeworth
Pros: Very compact, lightweight, battery life, crisp photos
Cons: Up close action shots
Summary: This camera is worth every last cent you'll pay. Let me tell you the battery life is amazing with little wimpy AA alkaline. I'm getting around 310 shots on one set, above the manufactures estimate. If your taking up close action shots they will come out blurry but far-out action shots will usually be just fine. Also remember that some more expensive cameras blur like that as well. One thing I keep hearing is how slow this camera is, well I'm not finding that problem at all. If you use this camera reasonably you will get some really gorgeous photos. Also I have used and seen many photos from digital cameras and they all have a problem capturing true to life images. Let me suggest a film camera for that purpose. If you want a good solid camera that is cheap but very good quality the Nikon L3 is just for you.

"Useless for photographing moving objects" on by SilentRob
Pros: Fairly low price, compact, screen visible in bright sunlight, AA batteries, SD card
Cons: Terrible delay between hitting shutter button and actual photo. Effectively useless for candid shots.
Summary: I bought this camera for a trip abroad later this year, but am testing it out on objects around the house. I took some photos of a rock formation outside my house at around 3PM PDT, and it was pretty washed out. This was fixed, however, by adjusting the exposure controls and white balance.
On stationary objects or posing people inside, the camera performs fairly well for its price, with good, clear, vivid shots. It has a "Vivid Color" setting if you want your colors to stand out more. Nice touch.
The terrible problem with this camera, however, and the reason I give it a low score, is the unacceptably long delay of at least 3 seconds between commanding the camera to shoot, and the time it actually does so. For instance, I wanted to take a picture of my new cat. I could have a great shot lined up, but between the time I press the shutter button and actually get the photo taken, he has enough time to not only look away from the camera, but to leave the room entirely.
I suppose this camera would be good for anyone who takes pictures of still objects indoors. Perhaps someone who needs to take pictures of products he's putting up for online auction would get great use out of this camera. It's okay for outdoor pictures as long as you take them in the morning or late afternoon. But if you want to capture any fleeting moments or candid shots dependent upon fast shutter responsiveness, the camera is effectively useless.
That one problem with the slow shutter is enough to bump this camera's rating from an acceptable 7 down to a mediocre 4. Look for a camera that takes pictures when you ask it to.Updated
It turns out that there is a way to get around the long shutter delay by having the camera focus first, before finalizing the shot.
The user must hold the shutter button halfway down until the LCD screen indicates the subject is focused, and then fully depress the button. Although this is a fairly awkward method of focusing, and a manual override would be preferred, it does allow for the prepared user to get in those candid shots I earlier criticized this camera about.
The camera is worthy of at least a "6" rating, not the 4 I rated it earlier.
