"Nikon quality, superb features, great price point" on by schlockmaster
Pros: Great feature set, solid build quality, SD memory
Cons: Wifi feature too new requires software to configure
Summary: I have owned several Canon digicams S30 S40 S60 S200 S400 SD300. They are solid and have excellent features. The Nikon equals anything Canon has to offer as a starting point. Sony builds excellent cameras that have superb features and solid build quality. Again, the Nikon has excellent build quality and superb features.
From the black colour which gives it a sense of James Bond cool, to the solid feel of the body and the grip, this camera is great. The pictures are crisp and clear, and the autofocus and settings menus are complete and cover all the bases.
We have to remember that this is a $500 consumer camera and not a professional unit. It is solid, does what it is supposed to do well and is compact and easy to handle and use. That said, I liked the great low light picture capability. The video mode is great and the ability to zoom during video mode is an excellent feature. After all who doesn't want to zoom when making a video.
The use of SD memory is an excellent feature as the prices are coming down and it is still fast and cheaper than Memory Stick. The only two things that I found to be strange are Nikons model number scheme. P1 should be the lower model that is 5 megapixel, and the P2 should be the 8 megapixel unit. However it all depends on the analogy of the P1, it is the number one product in the P series??
The only other complaint that I have is that there is no compact plug in battery charger a la Sony. That is a great invention and both Canon and Sony have chosen to go that route, although Sony offers it as an add on.
You can't go wrong with this solid well made camera. Good value for the money, and after all Nikon is one of the best brands out there. -
"Pretty slick little camera" on by skiggles
Pros: Wifi, compact size, rechargeable battery, 8mp
Cons: Wifi feature not as expected
Summary: I love this camera.
However, the wifi feature is what initially attracted me to this camera, but it doesn't work as you may expect. The camera will connect to a computer through a wifi network, however I assumed the wifi feature would show up as a network device, but that is not the case. You need to install the host software on your wifi-enabled PC or Mac, then the camera can establish a wifi connection with the camera. And even then, the connection is not fast. I find myself bragging about the WiFi feature more then I actually use it and prefer to just use an SD card reader to get images off of the camera, which is MUCH faster and a lot less frusturating. The direct wireless printing to a Pictbridge-enabled printer is also very, very slow. The WiFi feature needs improvement before it will become actually useful.
That said, I am very happy with the rest of the camera. It's perfectly sized (small enough to impress people, large enough to use it easily). I've taken some excellent photos (and some video) with the P1 and am very happy. The resolution is incredible, the camera is easy to use, and the battery life is excellent too. The display is a big 2.5" LCD and is very bright and very sharp.
I would recommend this camera. -
"Great Quailty Shots, WiFi, & Excellent Scene features" on by spkcider
Pros: 8MP, Scene Features, WiFi, & 3.5x optical zoom.
Cons: No anti shake feature.
Summary: I didn't have time or patience's to learn how to use my Canon Digital Rebel XT, so I sold it and got my P1. The P1 is great alternative. It's shoots in high quailty and have excellent scene modes.
Very compact size for a 8 mega pixels camera, and I'm suprised of how light it is.
I have been using the WiFi feature on my Powerbook in a WPA closed network and it works great. No problems connecting. I like how I'm able select the photos I want to tranfers. I have to admit, I'll probably have a hard time switching back to using the USB connection. It's nice not to have another USB cable laying around. However, speed a just bit slower when saving on hard drive. But I think I can live with it. -
"Superb! Ultra satisfied! Best camera on the market!" on by AR278
Pros: Comfy to hold, 2.5", crystal pics, pictbridge, WiFi
Cons: technically, none, but should have added a few more scene modes.
Summary: I am comparing this camera to the Olympus Stylus 800. I was never a Nikon user. I loved my Olympus, but after a few months of using it, my pictures became pixelated (something that a few others noticed right away). After taking roughly 300 pics on my Nikon, I have no complaints. The name says it all. I have been a digi-cam user ever since they came out and this one by far gave me the best clear cut pic production. If you are looking for something that delivers excellent pic quality, go for it...it is well worth every penny.

"Excellent comfortable camera" on by rami_c
Pros: Very solid picture quality, build and feel.
Cons: A bit slow start up
Summary: I like the feel and build quality, very good picture quality. There are a lot of scene modes and aperture priority that can help to be creative. The D-lightning works excellent but not on 3:2 ratio. The LCD is very clear and usable under sun-light condition. The only thing is the slowish start which one can be get use to very fast.
Did not use the Wi-Fi yet and I am not going to use it at all.
I choose P1 over 7900 for the bigger LCD and 3:2 ratio which I use a lot.
Like the camera very much
