"A great color companion for my Leica film bodies"
4.5 starson by bobtodrickPros: Full manual control and good low-light capability
Cons: There is no RAW
Summary: I've waited quite a while for a camera to come out that would be a good companion to carry around with my M6.
Though the Canon G7 was close...in truth I am first and foremost a Leica user but as well have always been partial to Nikon...I decided to wait and see.
In my opinion it was worth the wait. The P5000 is small, yet packs into its frame a 10MP sensor, full manual control, among the best low light capability in its class, flash shoe...everything you could want.
The menu system is based on the D200, well known for how intuitive it is...my P5000 was out of the box, up and running, in all the modes I wanted within 15 minutes...and I'm not exaggerating when I say I am NOT a computer guy.
Color right out of the camera is as good as I'm used to taking film to the local lab and requesting color corrected prints.
I have one huge disagreement with the editors review. Yes, the camera has a 1.5 sec or so shot to shot capability. What he fails to mention...AND WHAT IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT...is that shutter lag time is nearly non-existant. This is not just my opinion, most other reviews mention the short lag time.
This was never designed as a sports camera to take 15 shots in 5 seconds. And in most shooting situations the image is missed because of lag time, not shot to shot time.
Sounds like sour grapes to me.
In my opinion, a solid 8.5/10

I agree with Broderick. I have a Nikon D70 and F70 (yes there is a role for film) and an SB600 so even with the mediocre review I bought it. The controls and menu are easy and familiar. The barrel roll distortion is my only complaint but I found the image quality matching my D70 and with the SB600 the interior shots are excellent. Going above 400 ISO on any digital camera is best to avoid. I still don't understand the little whirring motor noise but it does not reduce the battery life and little motors (ie hard drives) can whir for thousands of hours.

Love the camera - don't let the review put you off.

I use a Canon 20D and a Canon Rebel (both digital) and find both of these excellent for my uses however both are large for everyday use. I find the Nikon P5000 a great performer in all aspects. I cannot understand the negative comments from CNET.
