Pros Great optics
Cons Could use better light sensitivity
Summary I had had the first generation of Coolpix for nearly 10 years, and used it professionally every day. Don't know how many pictures - tens of thousands (?) - I had taked before it gave up on me.
This camera is used for personal purposes, and it's every bit as good for modern time as the first one was for mid 90's. I took pictures of unbelievable quality and clarity in European cathedrals, and in the Colorado mountains. I tried other cameras - specifically Sony - with twice lense size but pictures are not nearly as good and clear - especially when zoomed in - as Nikon.
Are there better cameras? Probably yes but not for the money.
BTW, I have an S4 model which is almost identical to S10 except lower frame rate which is a disadvantage and standard AA batteries which is a HUGE advantage over S10 proprietary setup.Updated
I had the first generation CoolPix600 for about 7 years, and used it professionally - hundreds of pictures a week - until it finally gave up on me.
The replacement was S4 - almost the same as S10 except that S10 has higher fps video which isn't important for me and S10 uses proprietary battery unlike S4's standard 2 AA which adds flexibility.
In any case, over the last three years, I used this camera both professionally and recreationally. I took perfect quality pictures inside Paris cathedrals and at Black Sea beaches. I somewhat agree that in bright sun the screen tends to reflect but wouldn't go as far as rendering it "useless" but picture quality is so much better than anything I've seen including $1000+ sony in terms of detail, brightness, and contrast that I can forgive Nikon for not providing a viewfinder.
Pros Great image quality,True Image stabilization,Versatile design,Solid construction.
Cons No manual controls other than while balance. But perfect for target market!
Summary The more I use this camera the more I fall in love with it. I've had 6 other digital cameras; this one is my favorite! Not only is it excellent at what it was designed for...Super Zoom, but it's also amazing for macro photography. Having true image stabilization is a very big plus; especially for long zoom or low-light situations.
Other strong feature is the swivel design. It makes taking good photos at difficult angles much easier.

Pros 10x zoom is good
Cons Noisy and blurred beyond some level of zoom.
Summary It's good for both indoor and outdoor till certain level of zoom. If zoom crosses some level, image is not getting stabilized properly and itz too noisy.
70% of the images are blured while taking in running mode. So itz not worth it for this mode.
Pros Sweet zoom, great image quality, bright flash, nice selection of features, vibration reduction greatly improves blurring
Cons Slow focusing
Summary A wonderful camera and a needed upgrade from my old 2mp camera. A great camera for someone who cannot raise a camera to their face. Really impressed with the zoom (from way across the room I can take pictures of people who hate having their picure taken) and lcd screen that you can see from almost any angle. A great camera and well worth the money.
Pros It's a Coolpix
Cons Required minitor use.
Summary For extended battery life in my Coolpix 950, I keep the monitor off and set it to flash a preview after each shot. With out a viewfinder the camera must constantly focus to provide a preview to the monitor. I'm sure the S10 has better power management, but with no viewfinder the use of the monitor will be required.
