"Great at everything but taking Pictures"

by VFXJ on March 18, 2006

Pros: Amazing interface. Very usefull easy to use Jog Wheel/button wheel. Very nice solid feeling camera. Great product design Good looking camera, Wi fi Worked Flawlessly. Inclusion of doc

Cons: Dark edges on pictures taken in sunlight. Poor Low light preformance when taking pictures (Blur) on auto without flash. When using the Flash way too bright. Color reproduction was also not very good.

Summary: I realy wanted to love this camera but it just didnt do what it was suposed to do (Take Pictures) Very well. I compared the pictures to ones I took on my 4 yr old Coolpix 885 and my 4 year old images beat the S6 images by far.
I returned the camera and purchased the Sony DSC-T9 and so far am very pleased with the images. It has a highter ISO 650 and image stabilization to prevent the low light no flash image blurryness that the s6 is prone to. The Sony is however missing WIFI and A doc
    But you cant have everything.

Which camera would you suggest any ameture user to buy (except SLR cameras)?

I was planning to buy one and thought the specs of S6 Nikon to be attractive.

    Thanks

I work in a camera store and a few weeks ago I sold a Nikon S6. Last week the customer came back saying that when the full zoom was utilized, the flash didn't work well. I looked up the stats myself in the manual and with the full zoom, the flash only goes out like 5 feet which is really bad. I was looking to get a new camera and was thinking about the S6 but now I think I'm going to get the Canon Powershot SD550

The wifi only seems to work with the special Nikon software that must be loaded on a computer or thru the special print receiver supplied by Nikon. I was hoping for something simple and to just be able to send a pic from the camera since I carry a company laptop.

Everyone who slams an ultra compact digicam always has the same gripes: controls too small, no viewfinder, no manual controls, poor low-light performance, etc.

For the love of God, they are ultra compacts afterall. All ultracompacts from all manufacturers have the same flaws; it is only because of their extreme small size.

Sure, there are other small cameras with better features, including viewfinders, but if you look carefully at the specs, THEY ARE LARGER, even the Canon Powershots.

In short, don't be an as*hole and slam perfectly good cameras. Keep inmind the limitations of ultra compact cameras AND their target audience: amateur photographers on vacation, who want to, just as their monkier describes, "point and shoot."

If you complain about the lack of viewfinder and professional features, i.e. manual settings, then get an SLR body or larger camera.

Review these ultra compacts for what they are, because as it stands, they are simply too small to have these features that so many complain about a lack thereof.

Next someone will complain about the lack of fisheye and telephoto lenses for compact cameras.

Please back up your comments with facts when doing a comparison. I've read outstanding reviews on this camera and can provide a link to dcresource.com where people can see some examples of shots made by this camera:

I've compared shots from the s6 with the coolpix 885 and I see better quality from the s6... but that's just my opinion.

See the following page for Nikon Coolpix 885 examples: http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/nikon/coolpix885-review/index.html

I have the camera also and wonder if you can be more specific as to how the older camera beats the quality.
I have the S6 also and its image quality seems great.
