"Default settings are not your friends, change them" on by wendy_m

Pros: Great price for the features and resolution, good battery life (rechargable, not AA) sleek design, small and compact, great for snap shots intended for the web and good macro setting.

Cons: This camera is not going to perform as a DRL, it takes rather crappy snaps for print. The flash color is greenish or bluish at times (which can easily be corrected in a photo editing program) and the color balance/contrast isn't great by default.

Summary: The reasons that this camera gets four stars from me comes down to the price to features ratio.

Its a great little camera if you're willing to do a little photo editing, read the manual carefully (a few times-- I did) and tweak the standard setting to bend this sucker to your will and make it work for you. This is not a great point and snap digital camera, this is a good set up your shot carefully and don't take the software's word for it that everything will turn out alright.

Yes its a Nikon, but if you're expecting DSLR quality from an SLR you aren't going to get it, you are also not going to get many print quality shots from this SLR.

The controls are completely intuitive, so once you play with it for an hour or so, you can quickly change settings to suit your needs and lighting and get back to snapping photos. I haven't let my mom use it, but I'm sure that even she (who uses her blackberry as a clock and sometimes as a paperweight) could figure out the basic controls in a few minutes on her own.

"in a word... DISAPPOINTING" on by techcafe

Pros: small & black, sleek & stylish, lovely curves, easy to use...
    very sexy camera baby, yeah!

Cons: HOWEVER, it shoots rather mediocre pictures. i was quite let down actually, especially considering it's a Nikon.

Summary: a significant number of shots are out-of-focus, even though the AF-assist locked-on to the subject, and despite the fact that vibration reduction and motion detection are both enabled.

also, what you SEE is NOT always what you GET. that is, frame composition does not match-up precisely with what is shown on the LCD preview screen; the resultant image file is often askew, from what was originally displayed on the preview screen. so framing a 'perfect' shot is hit'n miss with this camera. point... and hope for the best.

white balance is not always correct, especially when the flash is activated; there is often a slight greenish hue to flash pictures, kinda like the shot was taken under fluorescent lighting, without WB correction.

image quality of the LCD preview screen is a bit disappointing... but hey, i'm picky about those kinda things.

most important though, the picture quality is not exactly stunning or anything, it definitely doesn't live up to Nikon's otherwise high standards. the S630 is not what i was expecting from a Nikon camera... this Coolpix S630 is nice to look at, but it's beauty is only skin-deep. it takes 'OK' pictures.

i bought this camera from Newegg... now i notice on their website that the S630 has been 'deactivated' from their product lineup. ghee... i wonder why??

don't buy this camera... or you too will be disappointed.

OH, and did i mention... i'm disappointed.
