"Fantastic still camera with few quirks"4.5 starson by talmy
Pros: Sturdy, generally good ergonomics, 100% viewfinder, great rear LCD display, two memory cards, fantastic battery life, works with old lenses.
Cons: Heavy, setting banks are awkward to use, virtual horizon seems tacked on and is single axis only, video is poor if you care about that feature
Summary: I replaced a D200 with the D300s this summer. I shoot mainly landscapes and was unhappy with the D200's battery life and poor operation with a GPS. I was concerned about the D300s noise at low ISO and color rendition but I found both to be better than the D200. Overall there was a general increase in quality and the better battery life (2 days on a charge as opposed to only a few hours) made the upgrade well worth it.
I must admit I don't know if the quality improvement can be totally attributed to the camera as I also upgraded my general purpose lens (16-85 VR replacing an 18-70) and improvements to post processing (Adobe CS5 and Aperature 3 replacing Adobe CS3) at about the same time.
