Well, there are a handful of cameras using the same Sony sensor, and I personally think the Pentax K-5 ekes out more out of it than the D7000. Sure, if you have a heap of Nikon lenses, why not buy a D7000, but if you're starting from scratch, the field is vastly different, and I would say you get more camera for the bucks if you opt for the Pentax K-5, but there a number of Sony cameras that uses the sensor in question, like the A55 and the A580, to mention two!
The K-5 is smallish, have more useful buttons (like deidicated ISO and +/- button, beside the shutter button). in easy to reach places than the D7000. It also excels in RAW photography, but I mostly take JPEG (silly me).
Side-by-side comparison show them to be equal in most respects, but the K-5 has faster burst speed and slightly better built-in flash power, the D700 slightly bigger viewfinder (both 100%, though). The rest is fairly equal, or identical!
Oh, yes, the K-5 is slightly lighter, and very water-resistant!
