Summary: This is an absolutely fabulous camera. It is my first DSLR, but my fourth Nikon. I have had this camera for about 2 yrs and have experienced NO malfunctions. This is what I expect from Nikon. Image quality is truly breathtaking. With this camera and a VR lens the low light performance is great. It is true that anyone can get great shots right out of the box, but it has virtually every feature you could want and then some. This is a camera that could definitely make someone a better photographer, the possibilities are endless.
I bought this camera without giving a thought to the video mode, I never really use it. It is quite limited, just a little bonus. Ignore it and you have a great camera. My kit lens(18-105) with the plastic mount was dropped by a drunken acquaintance and broken. I replaced it with a 55-200VR and it is great. I also use a 50mm 1.8. I cannot imagine anyone being disappointed with this camera. The image quality is superb.
