"Don't buy this one" on by danield517
Pros: Small, easy to use
Cons: Poor customer support,, poor durability
Summary: This one is good if you use your camera just for birthdays and christmas, but if you actually plan to use your camera, don't get this one. The clamshell lense cover failed after a couple years(The plastic track cracked). Olympus will repair it for $150 and it will be good for 2 more years. The camera also turned off accidently quite often when I was trying to take a picture because the lense cover would slide when I was holding the camera, which turns the camera off. Other bad points: Digital zoom has to be turned on everytime the camera is turned on. The camera must be turned off to preview the pictures after the automatic initial preview. The picture quality goes to the default quality each time the camera is turned on, which is not the highest quality.

"If you want a camera that makes it quick and easy to take & review your pics, keep shopping" on by umharms
Pros: Plenty of features
Cons: Slow start-up & long time between pics, can't review pics without turning camera off, shutter track poor quality and breaks, no sound on video
Summary: I got my camera about 3.5 years as ago as a gift and had troubles from the start. In the first 3 months, the sliding shutter broke off it's track, causing the camera to shut off on it's own (or fail to even turn on at times). It took over a month to get it back after getting it fixed through warranty. Two months after getting it fixed, the EXACT same thing happened again. The warranty had just expired and Olympus refused to cover the cost. $100 later all was fine........until less than a year later, when the SAME THING broke for the 3rd time. Now I just deal with it and stumble along as I refuse to put anymore money into this camera.
In addition, I found that the time from power up to 1st picture was lengthy (about 5 seconds) and the time between pictures was not much better.
I also found it extremely time consuming that you couldn't review the picture you just took without having to turn the power off (by closing the shutter, waiting for the lens to retreat and then hitting the "quick" view button. Nothing quick about that. No wonder the track kept breaking with having to open and close it each time you took a picture and wanted to view it afterwards.
I was somewhat surprised and disappointed that the video recording didn't have sound. I thought that the days of the projector were long gone.
It does take decent pictures, and has lots of features to play with, but that's about the only thing positive I have to say about this camera.
For a camera which cost over $600 at the time it was purchased, I thought it'd be of much higher quality and convenience. The only reason I've kept it as long as I have is because it was such an expensive gift.
I wouldn't recommend this camera to anyone and give it a generous 3 out of 10. -
"Good pictures, poor design" on by thirdstring
Pros: Olympus lens, many features
Cons: Sliding lens, proprietary battery, xD card, software
Summary: I have had a number of Olympus cameras, and they take great pictures. Olympus knows what its doing in terms of lenses and picture quality.
However, the sliding cover is a very weak design. Like others, I always accidentally turn off the camera, and expect the track to break sometime soon. The camera programming likes having the LCD on, which kills batteries, and in Auto mode I haven't been able to turn it off by default.
My other gripe is that Olympus always seems to change what it uses. The batteries & memory cards don't seem to stick around very long (Smart Media, now xD, some SD/MMC, some CF). They should have adopted SD or CF early on and stuck with it.
At this point, cameras are cheap enough that the difference between this one and a much better one isn't that noticable. I would pass on this one. -
"Great Quality, Poor Execution" on
Pros: Creates great looking photos
Cons: Out of 3 people who I know who own the camera, all 3 have the same problem. The lens randomly closes and the camera always acts up. Next cameras a sony

"Goes with me everywhere! Love it!" on
Pros: Auto is simple, movie is great on hi res, multi modes to play with, indexes in the camera... Can go sepia, b&w or lower res in the cam. The software w/it was good, too.
Cons: Low res movie mode needs work. Beginners need more instruction.
