"Don't buy this one" on by danield517
Pros: Small, easy to use
Cons: Poor customer support,, poor durability
Summary: This one is good if you use your camera just for birthdays and christmas, but if you actually plan to use your camera, don't get this one. The clamshell lense cover failed after a couple years(The plastic track cracked). Olympus will repair it for $150 and it will be good for 2 more years. The camera also turned off accidently quite often when I was trying to take a picture because the lense cover would slide when I was holding the camera, which turns the camera off. Other bad points: Digital zoom has to be turned on everytime the camera is turned on. The camera must be turned off to preview the pictures after the automatic initial preview. The picture quality goes to the default quality each time the camera is turned on, which is not the highest quality.

This review has made some accurate and some inaccurate comments. I've had a C50 for almost 3 years. I've taken thousands of photos with it, including many from overseas trips, and have been very happy with the photo quality. For standard 4x6 photos, clarity is great. I've blown some up to A4 to test quality and was still very happy, based on the "HQ" quality mode of the camera.

The comment about the slide cover is very true. The microswitch under the cover on my camera gave up after about 20 months - making the camera very difficult to use. Had it replaced (fortunately under an extended warranty) and it's OK again now.

The comment about having to turn the camera off for pic review is NOT true. You can review pics by double-clicking the small button to the upper left of the main control switches on the back (i.e. the same button you use to look at pics when the camera is off).

My main gripe with the camera (apart from the slide cover) was the small size of the LCD. I mostly used the optical viewfinder and became adept in making allowances for the parallax error. In outdoor light, I found the LCD bordering on the useless.

I've had the C-50z for about 2 years and I'm a frequent flier, so I treat my camera a bit rough. A few weeks ago, I too noticed the plastic track failing, and then then the cover started coming off. I bent the cover to return it to its original shape, and it's about 95% okay. But I've always been disappointed with its difficult controls, especially the way it resets settings (timer off, flash on) and weak low-light performance, and I've been frustrated with its cover when using a tripod. I have gotten some great pics with it (http://www.tysto.com/postcards.shtml) but now I'm looking for a tougher, better-performing take-anywhere compact and it won't be another Olympus with this cover design.

I had nothing but problems with this camera from the get-go. The track on the lens cover cracked within months of buying it. At first that wasn't a problem, but it continued to crack until it no longer held the lens cover in place which meant the camera would turn off. Another con, I missed so many shots with my infant daughter, due to the long set up time of the camera. Battery life was also a problem.

I just replaced this with the ultra-compact Canon SD400...and I am SOOOOOO much happier!!!
