Upside: Though it preserves much of the C-5050Z's design, the C-5060WZ makes two important changes. Olympus ups the zoom lens from 3X to 4X, for a range of 27mm to 110mm (35mm-camera equivalent). That gives it the widest angle of view of any high-resolution enthusiast camera on the market, which is good news for landscape shooters. The camera also sports a new LCD that can finally compete with models such as the Canon PowerShot G5's; it flips 180 degrees vertically and swivels 360 degrees. Plus, Olympus will offer extras such as new wide-angle and telephoto add-on lenses and a power grip for extended battery life.
Downside: The increased zoom range comes at the expense of lens speed. One of the C-5050Z's greatest assets is its wide f/1.8 aperture, whereas the C-5060WZ settles for f/2.8, the same as most of its competitors.
Outlook: The C-5060WZ ships this month at an estimated street price of $799. We can't wait to see if it makes the cut for our holiday recommendations. Stay tuned.
