"Great versatile, easy-to-carry camera!" on by tonglongtzu
Pros: fast start-up
manual focus
decent built-in flash
easy-to-navigate interfaceCons: no built-in view finder
Summary: This guy (or gal, if you prefer) is a good size for an ILC, it straddles the boundary between fits-in-a-large-pocket and need-an-extra-bag, depending on which lens you use. A 17mm pancake or similar lens will let you put this is a coat pocket, whereas anything LARGER than the 14-42mm will require another bag. Using the 14-42mm, I usually put this into my coat pocket comfortably...but comfort is relative, i guess.
Focusing time is good. Not great, but good. Certainly is awesome for everyday picture taking, but maybe a little on the slow side for fast-moving subjects. I never use it in that way so I wouldn't know. I like that this has an option for manual focus, which seems to be a dying things as newer m4/3 ILC lenses are doing away with this ability in order to make them more compact.
This thing starts up quickly and is fairly easy to understand and use. I've played around with the NEX-5/5n and was instantly turned off by the tiresome and annoying interface. Also, the EPL2 lenses are much more compact than for the NEX cameras. You can re-program most of the buttons if you have a mind too. Everything's within a comfortable finger-reach.
The flash is pretty good; it's also positioned so that you can easily pull it back and point it up towards the ceiling with your trigger finger to get a pretty good flash bounce. I don't know if they did this on purpose, but it works!
Image quality is excellent! I've printed out some great highest-res jpegs to 8x10. Haven't messed around with the raw format too much, but it can only be better, right?
The ONLY flaw in this camera I've found is the lack of a view-finder. Some people would use it, some people don't. It would've been nice to have a built-in one, but I know that the EPL2 is more compact because of its absence. Just budget in the separate VF-2 viewfinder if you can. The more I shoot with this camera, the more I feel like I could really use one. That being said, I've taken this camera on international vacations without a viewfinder and my pictures came out just fine!
The official Cnet review for the EPL2 wasn't exactly glowing, but this really is a great camera!
