It looks like 20x is the new 18x as Olympus incorporates the f2.8-4.5 26-520mm-equivalent lens from its top-of-the-line SP-570 UZ into the SP-565 UZ, which replaces the popular SP-560 UZ. Otherwise, it's identical to its predecessor. The advantage of this model is that it doesn't have the irritating zoom ring that's on the SP-570, but it also lacks a hot shoe. And I suspect the disappointing performance remains unchanged as well.

The SP-565 UZ is slated to ship in October for $399.99.

Summary: The SP-565UZ packs a lot of useful features for manual photography, but its image quality doesn't cut the mustard. Consider this camera if image quality isn't your primary concern and you are just interested in its zoom and super-macro capabilities.

Summary: New features include Shadow Adjustment technology and enhanced Face Detection, which can now recognize up to 16 faces. On the other hand, the camera's smaller size reduces the LCD to 2.5 inches versus the 570's 2.7 inch display. But the 565UZ is ...

Summary: Frankly we think the 20x zoom range is expecting too much. It involves too many optical compromises. In the middle of the zoom range resolution is reasonable but the extremes are plagued with distortion or diminished sharpness. There is an optional ...

Summary: At $400, the SP-565 UZ is a bit more expensive than the average point-and-shoot, and clearly bulkier, but it offers much more functionality. Adecent 20x zoom lens alone on a full-sized SLR would be far more expensive than the entire Olympus SP-565 UZ ...
