"Solid performer, ultra portable, go anywhere!" on by BigBrownHand
Pros: Shock proof
Water proof
Big range of built-in shooting settings (all accessible via a simple dial)
Rugged.Cons: Limited to use only XD cards which are often double the price of other memory for the same capacity.
Summary: This series of Olympus digital cameras are just wonderful for those of us who have adventure/outdoor lifestyles.
You can take it anywhere - because it is ultracompact. We often have it stuffed in our trouser pocket along with the pocket knife.
You can store it anywhere - because it is well-built and shock-proof. In particular, the lens and lens cap are somewhat protected by the casing and the lens cap is a lot more solid than most ultracompacts and compacts.
You can use it anywhere - because it is water-proof and snow-proof. Don't worry if you are in a tropical rainstorm, crossing a river or snorkelling. If you are toboganning or snow-boarding, this is just perfect to stick in the hip pocket of your ski gear.
And the camera comes with a large range of built-in settings that adjust for strong light (snow), blue filter (underwater), indoor lighting (incandescent, fluro), available light, etc. To get to these settings, just spin the dial and your last used setting is already selected.
Connecting camera to my PC (Windows Vista Home Premium) was simple plug-and-play. It is accessible via any TWAIN compatible software once connected. (I have yet to find a piece of software that did not access my Olympus automatically.)
I wished only that Olympus would go with a standard memory card.
(Note that on close-ups, the flash can be a bit bright and throws a fairly solid shadow behind the main subject. You can compensate by standing further away and then zooming in to soften the flash effect.) -
"above all the pros, it broke in 20 days!" on by cindyx3rella
Pros: -water proof
-shock proof
-freeze proof
-reasonable pricingCons: -IT BROKE IN 20 DAYSSSS!
-very very slow
-dislike the auto focus
-poor image quality for 10mpSummary: Dont buy this camera. I couldnt even believe it broke so fast. The irony is that water got in, & broke my camera lens. Only a few drops of water got in, so the lcd screen & everything still worked. I checked the whole camera looking for where the water could have leaked into, & it turns out the USB port hole slowly became misaligned. The leak proof seals only work when all the ports/holes/compartments on the camera are aligned. Even before it broke, the camera took forever to take. It's definitly not a "point & shoot." Also the suto focus is annoying since you cant choose what to focus on! Other than that, I really loved this camera. I mean all my friends were jealous of my underwater camera (:
Well, I bought it from walmart so I went to my local walmart looking for an exchange. I figured I would rather go to walmart than find a way to send it back to Olympus (have a one year warranty). I asked for an exchange, though the lady told me, "Many people have been returning underwater cameras, especially this model. I don't think you want an exchange."
So if you were looking to buy this camera, DONT!
I'm also looking for a new BETTER underwater camera that is more durable. -
"Worst camera I have owned." on by kander7
Pros: Water proof. Shock Proof.
Cons: Slow, terrible display, terrible photo quality, poor auto focus.
Summary: This is absolutely the worst point and shoot we have ever owned. I purchased it because my wife tends to drop cameras and break them. I hope the happens soon with this one. The picture quality is terrible. It is way too slow. The auto focus is terrible. We recently went on a cruise with some family and had to transfer their pictures to our computer because ours were so bad. We stopped using it after the first day. We will most likely donate this and go back to Canon. I certainly will never buy another Olympus product.

"Would never purchase another Olympus camera......" on by gmaheu
Pros: Small, easy to use, the on/off slider is a nice feature, the alarm clock is also nice.
Cons: Is not as durable as they claim. Mine broke within 29 days.
Summary: I bought this camera because I intended on using it on a regular basis underwater and on hiking trips. It said that it was drop proof, freezeproof and waterproof. Not totally true. I did use the camera underwater several times which worked great but soon the camera picked up this black spot about the size of a pea that showed up on every image and every video. I sent in for warranty and they said that I would need to pay $101.85 to have this fixed. I complained stating that it should be under warranty but that didn't help. As far as Im concerned this camera is junk. Ill never purchase an Olympus product again.

"DEAD after falling off dinner table" on by mknwvs
Pros: Took fine pictures WHEN IT WAS WORKING
Cons: NOT TOUGH or SHOCKPROOF......... Fell off dinner table about 4 feet high and hasn't turned on since.
Summary: Will never buy another Olympus "TOUGH" or SHOCKPROOF camera. I have the 1050SW, an okay everyday camera that I thought I could carry in my purse and use when I needed. Purchased at Costco for about $250 so therre was no extended warranty available (I will never buy electronics unless I can get an extended warranty now because of this) wasn't expecting it to last forever but thought I'd get a few good years out of it. I also thought it was suppossed to be "shockproof" so I was surprised when it went dead after it fell off the table. Thought maybe there was a little glitch and a quick fix, but I've gone to two camera shops and basically have been told to toss it and get as new one.
