Pros Waterproofing was put to the test and handled itself well.
Video shot at 720p outdoors in good lighting was great to watch on HD TV.
Some pictures with good lighting turned out nicely.
Cons Most pictures taken with the camera were soft and for 14 MPs I expected better.
After two months of use the SD card I had been using bent the pins in the camera. I didn't even think that was possible. Got a new camera, tried it again, same issue.
Summary I would not recommend this camera. I have to say that after using it for a number of months I was dissapointed in the quality of the craftsmenship. Olympus focused too much on the waterproofing and toughness and not enough on the internal camera quality.
Picture quality was not up to snuff. Compression was bad and there was almost always lens flare outside. Colors were also very soft in multiple shooting scenarios.
I cannot express more frustration over the SD pins being bent in my camera. This takes SD cards and I never heard of this happening before. In Compact Flash cards, sure, but not in SD. It happened to the replacement camera I got from the retailer after a few weeks. Not sure what's up but once the pins are bent the camera is useless if you want more than the internal memory.
Pros This camera can take anything. I love it most for being waterproof. I take it out with me every where, everyday. Sports practice, on the water, in the rain. The peace of mind is worth the money. I never worry about it leaking or breaking.
Cons I am not a photographer. I am a 19 year old sports enthusiast who is hard on electronics. I broken and soaked cell phones. I'm tough on gear and Olympus Tough is tough enough for me. I don't know if 14 mega-pixels is a good but they look good to me.
Summary The pictures look good, it can zoom really close, it shoots great video, and most importantly, its durable and waterproof. I can take it anywhere and not worry about it. That peace of mind is worth it for me.
Pros Outweighed by the cons.
Cons Incredibly slow to boot up - you will want to smash it
So complicated that you need to refer to the instructions if something weird appears on the screen like grids
Stupidly no charging station for a back up battery to be charging on.
Summary Every time you turn the camera on you will have to endure a blue screen with the Olympus Logo which lasts for as long as whatever it is you are trying to shoot. I have owned many cameras but never have I experienced this sort of delay. It is incredible that a camera can take so long to boot up, with all the advances in chip processing speed and technology in general. On Xmas day after missing shot after shot of kids doing this and that I decided I could not possibly live with this camera one more day and I had it crushed in a vice and then smashed with a hammer. I would upload the pics if it was possible.
The menu tree is diabolical and so when I found the screen showing a grid pattern there was no way to remove it despite covering every concievable branch of the menu. Turning the camera off and removing the battery wouldnt remove this grid. I have never found this degree of complexity and lack of intuitive design in a camera. It was the final straw.
Despite being assured by the retailer that the camera came with a charging station for the battery and I wouldnt have to connect the camera to mains power to charge the battery, IT DID NOT. So if your battery is flat you cant swap it for another that has been left to charge because stupidly the battery charges in the camera. I have since found that this is an 'optional extra'.
Pros Toughness, Picture quality, Can take this camera anywhere with no worries, Video quality is great!
Cons Weight, Bulky size, Battery life
Summary This camera is the toughest camera I have ever seen. This camera is perfect for soldiers who travel to many different environments. I bought this camera after a witnessing a friends Stylus Tough 8010 sustain a fall of 1250ft from an aircraft during an Airborne Operation. After two hours of searching for the camera it was found in a farmers field. The camera was turned on and worked perfectly with no damage. This same camera also sustained a 6x roll over after our vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan. I can't say enough about the durability of this camera.
