"Good but some flaws" on by TANGKR

Pros: Good zoom, 5x zoom, but can go up to 6.4x OR 8x zoom
    picture quality
easy controls and simple, easy-to-figure-out features
If batteries run out, you can just go out to any store and buy any AA batteries
    lightweight

Cons: wish it had a better lithium rechargeable battery
    slightly bulky
    wish it was slimmer
    plastic grip feels cheapy

Summary: A good, well balanced camera. I recommend rechargeable AA batteries. They laster MUCH longer than simple alkalines. I have had asolutely no technical problems with my camera and I expect none either.

"Best camera ever! Camcorder as well. Perfect lens!" on by edipo_electra

Pros: This camera is an excelent camera, with a marvellous lens; but it is also a great camcorder, with DVD quality at 30 fps.
Great variety of settings is the perfect feature for the ones who are looking for an adventure in every picture taken.

Cons: Maybe the batteries... wouldn't it be better with a good litium batt? Apart from that, I couldn't find any other con.

Summary: I've had lots of digital cameras, but this one is the best by far. two in one: perfect pictures and perfect-high-quality movies DVD quality... What else can one ask for in a camera?
I forgot... aren't 8 megapixels enough? When the lens is so marvellous, 5 megapixels is an exaggeration.

"LUMIX LZ8 #1" on by nwberean

Pros: Size. 5X optical zoom. AA batteries. Thinner profile. Intuitive controls. Control buttons are distinct.

    Cons: None so far.

Summary: I like the size and that it uses AA batteries. It also has a 5X optical zoom which is higher than the 3X most small cameras have. Compared it to the Canon A590 but the Lumix won out because of the thickness profile. Controls seem to be intuitive. Have not used the software yet to download pictures so I do not yet know the "final" results. More later as I discover more (only had for about 10 days).

"ATTN: djcutler ... I need your HELP !" on by topsykretts

Pros: Camera nails the expose in iAuto almost 100% of the time.
Manual expose with 60sec shutter makes for amazing night shots.
My shots fooled the camera store clerk thinking I had taken them with a DSLR... no, just a 75.00 P&S !

Cons: At the long end of the 5x zoom, imaged can look soft. Hit or miss. Adding extra sharp in Picasa fixes the issue.

DUST ! This camera seems to be prone to dust on the sensor even though it's a sealed unit?

Summary: Hey djcutler... if you're getting this, I sure could use your help!

I too had the same experience. I dropped my LZ8 and sure enough... dust on the lens/sensor. I am a fix it myself type as well, but for the life of me could not get access to the sensor. It was 150.00 for a tech to fix it, so I used the Jedi mind force (since it's discontinued) and found a seller on ebay who had a couple brand new units.

I bought another one for 75.00 and was a happy man... until I dropped it and the darn thing and same issue of dust on the sensor.

So, if you're getting this my LZ8 brother... I could use your help in getting my two LZ8's dust free.

You gave a nicely detailed explanation of where and what you did. I will use it as a guide, but if you get this message somehow and can provide even more details, you'd be a camera saver.

It's July '11 and I've only had my new LZ-8 replacement for two months... so I'm bummed out about it.

But thank your for your post as it gives me hope I 'should' be able to fix the problem myself.

"A sweet little camera!" on by djcutler

Pros: Takes great pictures, feels good in my hand, great all around point and shoot.

Cons: Might be nice to be able to use lithium-ion rechargables: BUT, I found the Sanyo AA eneloop batteries work wonders. So no con really.

Summary: The Panasonic LZ-8 works great detecting settings in auto mode, yet allows a nice range of manual controls should you wish to take control. Conversion lens (tele, wide angle, macro, & filters) from Opteka can be purchased on ebay which attach magnetically. Have not purchased yet but would like to hear from someone who has as I am wondering if the magnetic field anyway interferes with memory card or camera operation. My wife dropped this camera after which it would not focus and a spot appeared in the display and on the now blurry pictures. I removed the 6 exterior body screws, disconnected the 4 interior ribbon cables (at which point the back came off) and 1 screw at the inside top of the camera just below the mode dial. I then gently removed (be sure to gently lift the plastic clip just below sd card slot when removing front cover) the the front which houses the lens and sensor. directly in the middle is a small metal cover held on by 3 screws. The sensor is mounted to the inside of the cover so be very careful when removing. After removing I blew off the sensor and the interior lens then re-assembled in reverse. Wallah! the camera focuses again and the spot/dust particle is gone from viewfinder and pictures. So being the do-it-yourselfer I am, I'll have to say I was very impressed by the simplicity and mechanical design of this camera, plus the ability of it to survive a 3' drop on the concrete with no mechanical damage. Panasonic & Leica... You guys rock!
