"A top quality ultra-compact camera with optical image stabilization" on by aaybee
Pros: Very comact and light, large high resolution LCD screen, and optical image stabilization
Cons: No optical viewfinder, does not zoom during movie recording.
Summary: PANASONIC DMC-FX9 REVIEW
The Panasonic DMC-FX9 is a fantastic ultra-compact digital camera.
I did a lot of research before deciding on this camera, and now after having owned it for about a week I am convinced that I made a good choice. (I previously owned a Canon Ixus V2).
My main criteria were:
1. Must be ultra-compact pocketable size.
2. Must be capable of taking nice sharp, well exposed pictures.
3. Must have a large (2.5 inch) LCD screen with high resolution (>200,000 pixels).
4. Must have a tripod mount.
5. Preferably have Optical Image Stabilisation.
6. Preferably have VGA movie mode at 30 frames per second, with sound.
7. At least 3 times optical zoom.
8. Preferably weigh no more than 150g.
9. Preferably have MPEG4 compression for movie mode.
The FX9 meets criteria 1 to 8. Criteria 1, 3 and 5 taken together count out nearly every other camera!
The high resolution screen is excellent especially when operated in the brightness-boost mode (which I use all the time). The viewing angles for the LCD screen are very good horizontally, but not so good vertically. By this I mean that you can observe the screen from either side without the colours changing much but there are fairly major changes if you tilt the screen towards or away from you.
The movie mode is excellent, especially in 30 fps, VGA (640 X 480 pixels). However in this mode it chews through memory at an alarming rate of around 1.3 Mbytes per second! I would strongly recommend buying a 1 GB SD card if movies are going to be taken. Also note that a high speed card is required – at least 10 Mbytes per second write speed.
Battery life is pretty good and a big improvement on the FX7. It is a pity that there is no option to charge the battery via the USB cable that is provided to transfer images to a computer.
Start-up time is nice and fast; in fact all aspects of the camera are fast and responsive. The high speed focus modes also work well.
White balance is a bit too cool in Auto White Balance mode. It can be set to ‘warm’ in the Colour Effects menu but this takes it a bit too far the other way, although it seems to be a good setting for flash. In the other white balance modes (Daylight, Cloudy, Tungsten etc) you can easily trim the WB via the top button on the navigation pad. This is a nice feature.
Overall I would rate this camera as excellent. Picture quality is above expectations, build quality is very good, movie mode is very good, etc and yet this little gem weighs only 150g complete with battery and SD card!
PROBLEMS:
1. No optical viewfinder. Few ultra-compacts have them now although Canon still does.
2. No MPEG4 compression.
3. Not enough room for your thumb above the navigation pad, although I am getting used to it.
4. Camera will not zoom while recording a movie.
5. A bit noisy at high ISO values but this is to be expected for very small CCD sensors. (And it should be noted that a small sensor is the starting point for an ultra-compact camera).
I could write a book about this camera but I hope the above is helpful to other users and would-be purchasers.

"This camera rocks" on by derek94114
Pros: Image stabilization; Leica lens; beautiful and simple design
Cons: videos take lots of memory; no optical viewfinder
Summary: I bought this camera based on the strength of review from various sources on the web, and I'm so far very happy with it.
The display is big, bright and beautiful. Although the manual controls are limited, I've found that the camera does quite well when used in point-and-shoot mode. When in doubt about the light, the auto-bracket mode lets you capture the same shot at several different exposures, so you never miss a shot. The optical image stabilization works wonders in lowish lighting. The videos this camera takes are smooth and crisp, but they do take up alot of room on your card. If you're gonna use this camera to take movies, you need a high-speed 1 GB card, minimum.
I took this camera to a party recently, and it was the star of the party. The fact that it's black attracted alot of attention! Silly? Sure, but it is a very attractive camera.
I love this camera, but I'm a little nervous about the screen. I just ordered an Invisible Shield protector, so hopefully that'll keep the scratches away.
Bottom line: this camera is head and shoulders above the Canon SD-550, it's biggest competitor. -
"Small, Lightweight & EZ to use Point&Shoot Camera" on by S2Imager
Pros: Great Leica Len & Lg. LCD, and Fast Shooting Rate
Cons: only 6MP for the price ($380) of a 7MP camera
Summary: I am a Professional Photographer for 13 years and have shot digitally for 4 years and have 8 yrs exp. in Photoshop.
My wife wanted a new compact digital camera. We were replacing her Fuji A-10 3MP camera, which is still a good little (but bulky) digital camera.
As a seasoned Photographer, I was going to avoid any electronic company type manufacturers (ie. Toshiba, HP, Panasonic,Casio, etc.) and stick with the industry leaders like Kodak, Canon, Nikon, Sony(borderline), Fuji and Minolta. My wife really wanted a Sony Cybershot because of its compactness and her friend had one. After looking at the flat small lens of the sony... no way. So we got the Nikon 7900 (a 7MP, $350) digital Camera. The Nikon had a lag time in snapping the shot. The Nikon was Autofocusing too slow.
The next day we exchanged the Nikon for a Panasonic Lumix 6MP and paid $30 for the difference. The Lumix 6MP was fast to focus and sharp image on LCD and small. So, my wife was happy. -
"Great little camera !!" on by etorres101
Pros: Design, great pictures, easy to use
Cons: Sorry have not found one yet
Summary: Thank God I didn't listen to CNET rating of this camera (they rated the silver version just a 7.0), because this camera is a small wonder. I was afraid to purchase a Panasonic because lets face it, they are not known for their cameras, but because of your reviews I decided to try it. It takes great pictures, nice videos and menus are easy to learn. All I can say is a BIG THANK YOU to those who took the time to review this amazing little camera.

"Great camera" on by brad605
Pros: Leica lens, image stabilization, nice looking black body.
Cons: Price? You get what you pay for!!!
Summary: Very good camera, the only reason I wanted a Sony was the Ziess Lens, But Panasonic has the Leica, it is a very high quality optic lens, that is part of the higher price. Pay less get crappy glass. My other camera is a Kyocera Finecam SL-400, I bought it because it was very thin and had a very quick start up. I wish I never bought it, it collects dust and my Panasonic gets to see the world and a couple SPRINGSTEEN SHOWS too.
Peace, Brad
