"Best super zoom I've ever had"4.5 starson by janzpix
Pros: Image quality is outstanding. Being lightweight and versatile makie this camera an excellent alternative to dragging around a heavy DSLR.
Cons: While build quality is good, plastics make it feel cheap. Program dial mechanism on back seems flimsy but works well. Noisy after ISO 400. Lousy RAW software and fact that user manual is only on disc is not a good feature.
Summary: I consider myself a semi pro photographer and I've lugged more than my share of camera equipment around for decades. I've been looking for something that could do almost as much as my DSLR in a smaller, lighter package.
I've tried practically every super zoom out there (Olympus, Nikon, Canon) and the Lumix FZ100 is my favorite by far. While the image quality from my Canon IS20 was good, the Lumix blows it away. I've used this camera for shooting birds and the burst speed keeps up with the birds' movements easily. I've had minor issues with the various menus but that could easily be remedied if there were a physical user manual available.
The flip screen is great and makes those odd angled shotes a lot easier. I've not experienced any difficulty in viewing the screen in bright sunshine. It's been easy to switch scenes and modes on the fly without missing a shot. Thus far battery life has been decent (almost 400 shots) but then I don't use the flash either.
If you're a traveller and don't want to take a boat load of heavy equipment with you, the FZ100 would make an excellent travel companion. Overall I'm quite pleased with this camera and would highly recommend it.
