"Carry around camera, with ability to take M lens."
Pros: The controls are fairly intuitive, manual focusing is surprisingly good and soon to be available adopters will allow the use of M bayonet mount lenses on the micro 4/3 body. Image quality even with the kit lens is quite good.
Cons: Raw mode not yet available in photoshop or aperture. Poor instruction manual.
Summary: I mainly purchased the camera because of the soon to be available adopter for M bayonet lenses. Thus I will be able to use my Leica and cv fixed focal length lenses on something digital beside the M8. As the autofocus will not work with these lenses it is important to be able to focus manually. Despite the problems with EVF's it turns out that this is quite well implemented on the G1. You can set it so that a slight turn of the focus knob will put the view finder into a magnified mode enabling easy focusing. I don't know if this will work with the leica lenses, however it is easy to enter this mode manually. The image quality even with the kit lens is surprisingly good, however the included raw developer, silkypix, is horrible to use and I have so far only used the camera in jpeg mode. I do think the micro 4/3 has great potential and so far I'm very pleased with the G1. One problem with the EVF, which otherwise is excellent, is a failure to show light and shade very well. Thus when shooting a sunset one does not see the glow and halo effects expected, though they come out fine on the file. Still the deal maker for me is to have an alternate to the M8 on which I can use my Leica and CV glass.
