"Not thrilled"on by dapjang
Pros Sold body, good kit lens
Cons no af illuminator, no focusing grid
Summary I was very excited to get my new camera. I've had this camera for about a two months now, so I've used this product for a fair enough time, enough to judge it. The camera camera has a very large LCD, which is nice. Also its kit lens is much better than the one that comes with the Rebel XT. The body has a very good solid feel to it (unlike a rebel which feels very cheap). However, I was unimpressed by the flash performance. Also, the DL doesn't have a AF illuminator so might as well focus manually in the dark, because the auto focus goes crazy. Another gripe I have is the image format. At the highest resolution, the images are 3008 x 2000 pixels. Which is not the correct ratio for most computer monitors, and for prints. For example if you wanted to print a picture you took on a 4x6, you'd have serious cropping at one of the ends (about 350 pixels!) VERY ANNOYING. Besides that its a nice camera, I hope pentax releases firmware for that last problem.
Pros Easy to use, great kit lens, great color, built like no other camera in the price range!
Cons White balance a little off, but somethign you can easily fix.
Summary The first thing you'll notice with the camera is the fact that it looks well built and you get reassured when you slip it into your hands. This camera is built far better than any other DSLR in it's price range and even some that surpass it by $300+.
The DL is built for the beginning DSLR user, but has plenty of room to grow with you for a couple of years. The ability to get lenses is so much easier than with any other brand because you can use almost every lens made for a pentax back to about the 1960s so if you need a great lens expect to spend around $50 in a garage sale because someones trash is now your treasure! Even online auction places have some really sweet lenses for about %75-$100 that will put most competitors lenses to shame especially their prices.
The image quality puts many other cameras to shame and a lot of people won't admit that. I've taken pictures with almost all the other competitors in the price range to about $400 more and the image quality is either above or equal to them all. The only thing you're loosing is a little bit of physical size becase megapixels don't mean better or higher quality images, it all in the lense and sensors.
If you're looking to get into digital photography at a higher level this camera is made for you and all you need to do is put it into your hands and take a few pictures to realize how great this camera is.
Pros large screen, simple menu, comfortable in small hands
Cons haven't found one yet
Summary very intuitive for the advanced amature looking for more than a point and shoot. Fits well in a womans hands without being heavy. Ability to easily switch between automatic and manual along with different combinations inbetween (shutter speed, apature override, full manual, auto or manual focus, etc etc). The write speed to the memory card beats the other cameras I have had.
Pros Professional quality pics...easy to use. Love all of the options and pre-settings.
Cons None. It has everything I wanted. If you care about size, it's a larger size. But I don't.
Summary I had owned a great 35mm Pentax camera before that took wonderful pictures, which, after 20 years went caput. So, after repairing failed, I wanted to try no one else but Pentax. Again, I'm extremely pleased with the photo quality and look forward to adding my new 70-300mm zoom lens to my collection. I highly recommend buying from Ritz camera or Wolf Camera (same folks)...buying from my local WC, I got 18 free photography classes with my purchase. You don't need to know that much about cameras to operate this one, though, and it's pro quality.
"My best SLR"on by NJAnalyst
Pros Great photos, color, ease of use, compact size, compatible with Pentax mount lenses
Cons Autofocus is slow , auto white balance doesn't work as well as manual setting
Summary I have been a Pentax SLR user for years, beginning with the SuperProgram, ZX-50, and ZX-5n. Recently, I upgraded to the *ist DL and I am very pleased with it. The photos are as good if not better than my 35mm SLRs and all of my lenses work with the new camera. I especially like the ability to shoot in low light without the use of a flash. The kit lens works very well and produces high quality images. The only weaknesses are the slow autofocus and the auto white balance. For me, these are not major problems are are outweighed by the strengths and fair price of the body.Updated
I recently purchased the Pentax 50mm-200mm consumer lens for the Pentax istDL. It is an excellent lens, perhaps sharper and faster than the 18mm-55mm lens. Colors are also vibrant.
