Pros Small and easy to use; good quality pix for bottom end camera
Cons Extremely slow, low battery life, POOR SERVICE
Summary While my recently purchased S50 worked, I was more or less satisfied. For the seemingly low price, the camera performed ok (not great) and took good quality pix. However, the most expensive and most fragile piece - the LCD display - is NOT covered under warranty. After the LCD cracked without being bumped or dropped (even the clear plastic protective covering didn't crack), I have spent the past THREE MONTHS dealing with service centers and paid an additional $150 for parts and labor, and THE CAMERA IS STILL NOT FIXED. It seems that so many of these parts need to be replaced that I am too far down the list for service within the 6+ weeks the camera has been at the service center.
What's more, no more pictures... I strongly encourage you to consider the FULL cost of this camera to realize that it is NOT A GOOD VALUE for the money.
Pros Easy to use. Great photo quality. Excellent software
Cons Seems a little slow on focusing in low ligtht
Summary My wife bought this camera for me for Christmas. It's my first digital camera so I don't have a basis for comparison. I like this little camera though. It fits in my shirt pocket, It's easy to use, and takes great pictures. It does record video, but I don't use this function because I have a digital video camera which, by the way, also takes digital still photos. Neither camera performs their secondary function well enough to use regularly for that purpose. This camera does have an audio record only mode which I thought was kind of interesting, and could be useful at times.
One thing I really like about this camera is the bundled software. I can upload pictures to my computer in about 3 to 5 seconds which really extends battery life if you don't have the optional AC adapter. At that speed who needs it anyway. It also has a photo editing program which seems a bit short on features, but is easy to use, and has an instant fix feature that works really well. It has another program called "Photo Slate" which makes It really easy to print photos from the uploaded files. I can have pictures from my camera to my printer in less than 1 minute.
I purchased a one hour battery charger with 4 nimh batteries. This seems to be sufficient unless you planned on taking more than 50 or 60 pictures a day with the LCD screen on. Auto focusing in dim areas seems to take about 2 to 4 seconds, and flash recovery about 5 seconds. This could be relative to battery state but seemed a little slow. One thing I wish this camera had, and all digital cameras need, is a separate button to turn on and off the LCD screen without having to find it in the menu each time. The menu buttons are easy enough to use, but this seems to me like a feature that one would like to have instant access to due to the frequency of it's use (for me at least).
I am overall very happy with this camera. I just purchased a 1 Gig SD memory card for my upcoming trip to Disney, given that the internal memory is about 11 Meg and it doesn't come with a SD card. If you are a professional photogragher you may want more, but if you just want to point, shoot, and print, this is a great little camera.
Pros Size is amazing. Takes wonderful and sharp short videos. Also tried the Sony W5 (and liked it). This is sleeker and smaller, for about the same price.
Cons The flash recharge is riduculously slow and it is difficult to take action shots due to lame access to battery. PC interface is behind the times.
Pros Rugged. Good pictures. Super-macro focus works great. Decent battery life with lithium batteries.
Cons Slow flash recharge. Slow shot-to-shot. Fails to focus in low light.
Summary Great pictures when your subject isn't moving (not for parents!) Focuses easily in bright light and offers great pictures. Macro and Supermacro give clear close-up shots. Hard to focus in dim light and flash is not very strong. AVI Video is good and time limit is the remaining size of your memory.
Pros small, cheap
Cons everything else
Summary I've had this camera for the past 2 years and have regretted buying it ever since. It is barely decent in normal light, let alone low light. The picture quality in terms of colours, saturation has generally been poor. It is slow both in terms of shot to shot, and in terms of focusing....most of the time the 'moment' is gone by the time my camera has finished focusing. Its battery life was poor to start off with- even with Lithium batteries i could barely last one outing, and its simply gotten worse over time. I would NOT recommend buying this camera to anyone...
