"Great camera, but doesn't work! - The E18 Error"
Pros: I bought the camera because the reviews were very positive, and the value relative to functionality was quite good.
Cons: My problem can be summed up in one word: "E18." I would encourage anyone who is considering buying this camera (or any other Canon Powershot-branded camera) to first run a Google search on Canon Powershot cameras and the E18 error message. You will find t

FROM CANNON SUPPORT
Issue: Lens won't move and camera may display an E18 or "Lens" error.
Solution: Possible solutions for an E18 or Lens Error message PowerShot A95
The "E18" or "Lens" error message indicates an error that involves the lens unit or lens cover.
This error may appear where the lens is prevented from properly extending or retracting such as, for example, when pressure is applied to the lens or the area surrounding the lens while handling the camera. The error may also be displayed if the lens unit/camera has been subjected to an external shock, or if a foreign substance (i.e. liquid, sand, dirt) enters the camera. -

Canon not only seems to have an obvious problem with unhappy E18 customers, but now also has come out with a service advisory that announces they've used inferior wiring making some LCDs go blurry.
Canon released the service advisory in Asia in April 2005 but didn't release it in the states until Nov. 2006. I wonder why the difference in dates and how many cameras were fixed, there owners charged, during those months.

And no, ... keeping your Canon clean does not ensure the E18 error will not appear. -
Unfortunately, this is still a problem. My new s80, less than 2 weeks old, died with the E18 error the first day of my trip to china...

Store the camera in a dust free environment, and keep it in a ziplock bag when taking it to the beach.
Just blow the lens mechanism out with a scuba tank or any other dry high pressure air source after using it in dusty environments. the E18 error is caused bu dirt jamming the lens mechanism and is solved by getting the mechanism cleaned. the moment the lens is jammed, turn the camera off immediately. instructions on cleaning the jammed mechanism are available on the internet, but dont attempt this unless you have some know how.
