Pros: Slim, compact, flip screen are great features

Cons: Not reliable. After using the camera for just a year, it began to malfunction. It would shut off right after taking a shot while the pictures are being saved. We lost a lot of memorable pictures with this camera. We assumed the pictures we took were be

    "Perfect pocketable travel digicam" on

Summary: After 9/11, the juicing of the airport xray machines caused us to look for an alternative to traveling with two carry-everywhere Oly Stylus (one zoom) film cams. Last Jan, the only truly pocketable 4 MP digicams available to us were the Pentax Optio and the Ricoh. We heard that the Pentax had battery issues, so we opted for the Ricoh with its bigger battery and other features--after all, Ricoh IS a camera maker. My first real camera, in 1955, was a Ricohflex (still have it!). After shooting nearly 1000 frames with the RR1, we are 100 percent satisfied. No battery probs--a day with the tulips in Holland, 120 4 MP frames, and the battery was still going strong. Daylight pix are crisp and properly exposed with good color. Photoshop is needed only for cropping, sizing, and an occasional tweak. Autofocus is precise. True, the cam is a P/S, but there are workarounds. Example, if you want a blurred background, set 200 ISO, zoom out, and manual-focus up close. Excellent (ISO 800 with rare "sparklies") indoors available-light capability minimizes need for flash. And you can auto-bracket three shots at a time if you're not sure. Flash is tricky until you get used to the three power settings. You can preset the shutter button half-way for no-lag action shots or you can continuous shoot until the 8 MB internal memory fills--3 shots at highest res or 123 at web-res. And you can macro-focus down to one-half inch in case you are into butterfly navels. And that big tiltable LCD viewing screen makes it easy to review the day's shoot and eliminate the bad ones. We love our Ricoh!

"THe best birthday gift ever." on

Summary: I don't know where the rest of you live. I'm from Vancouver and I live in Tokyo. I have no need to shop on line because I can buy anything of electronic nature in person. I choose this camera because of it 's eliteness. I have no regret buying this camera.
