"a great camera, if only they could fix the battery problems" on by johndoe014

Pros: excellent features, sturdy construction, great photos

Cons: consumes batteries for breakfast, lunch and dinner

Summary: I owned this camera for two weeks, during which time I fell in love with its features, and the fabulous photos it takes. However, no matter what kind of alkaline batteries I tried, none would last for more than a few hours of light use. I would turn the camera on, take a picture or two, and turn it off again. By the end of the day, I would have about a dozen photos, and two dead batteries. Experimenting, I found I could get about a dozen photos OR about three minutes of video on a new set of batteries before they died. NiCads don't even last that long, and although lithium lasts longer, they are priced disproportionately high. I gave up and returned the camera for a refund, after two weeks and 24 AA batteries.

"Good camera in terms of functionality, but bad photos" on by Mennodus

Pros: The camera has many functionalities, and you can change almost any aspect of making a photo. But you can also use the automatic settings. The camera is very small if you look at all the different functions. The display is excellent.

Cons: For some reason, the camera does not take good pictures when you compare it to other cameras. It needs more light than more modern cameras. Anything that moves will show up blurry on the picture, unless there is plenty of light. The software stinks.

Summary: When i compared it to other cameras, the Samsung S1050 had by far the most functionalities in that price range. You can manually change the timing, the focal point, the ISO, and many other functions. The automatic function also works nicely. The problem is that all these functions are useless when the camera needs the amount of light it does. Compared to other cameras, i always have to be extra careful the camera doesn't move when there is less light. The camera is relatively small if you look at the amount of functions. An excellent feature is the fact that you can take pictures without the camera making any sound, which is handy when you have to stay silent. The display is also good, and the functions are easily accessible, and are clearly visible in the screen. A problem with the different settings is that once you have changed them in the different menus, its hard to find out what you changed. It does not clearly say what the current settings are. Another downside is the software, which is simply a disgrace. But i guess most people will just access the memory card directly, in which case you wont need the software. A minor downside is that it only works with rechargeable batteries. It wont work properly with ordinary batteries. The video is very bad: during filming, the audio will regularly fall away when the camera is adjusting to a different light (eg if you move the camera). In hindsight, i would have bought a simple point and shoot camera that needs less light.

"Can't beat it for the price" on by photog mom

Pros: price; MP; zoom; shake reduction

Cons: short battery life, not really small

Summary: I just purchased this camera last month. I shopped long and hard and visited every website on photography that ever existed, plus every brick-and-mortar photography store in town. I selected it b/c I wanted a pocketable camera w/some decent zoom, more megapixels (my old one has 7), a bigger LCD screen, that would still take SD cards and AA batteries (getting rarer and rarer). I paid less than $200 online.
So far, the pictures have been pretty darn good, and under some difficult shooting situations (like my daughter's play, where she's moving about onstage and I'm in a dark auditorium). I'm no photography expert, just a mom who wants great pictures of her kids, and vacations, and some "artsy" stuff as well. My mom (who generally shoots great pics) and I took pics in the same situation (the play), and hers were a blurry mess w/her year-old Nikon Coolpix L-something. The Samsung's Anti-Shake Reduction technology really makes the difference.
Even the video seems like pretty good quality.
    Some small complaints:
--The batteries do run out fairly fast, so always carry spares and invest in rechargeables if you haven't already!
--The real manual is on CD only, which is annoying -- I don't want to print out 102 pages; it is too much to ask for THEM to do it? But whatever. A small basic one is included, to get you started.
--The measurements listed on every single website (including Samsung) are just wrong. They don't include "protrusions", and so what good is that? The protrusions are indeed THERE! So I painstakingly measured the camera (when in between sixteenths I rounded up), and here are the REAL measurements:
    W: 4 3/16 in. H: 2 9/16 in. D: 1 3/4 in
So, overall, I really like it a lot so far. A lot of bang for the buck.
