"Excellent camera in small package!"
Pros: small size with big screen, easy to use but with advanced feature set, Can use older/original memory stick
Cons: When using older/original memory stick (not memstick PRO) with an older Sony camera, the memory stick will have to be formatted each time you switch it between the older sony and new sony camera.
Summary: Excellent 4 MP camera. Erganomically better than the candy bar style sonys for my hands.
It has a full feature set of controls to allow quick and easy point & shoot pics, partially manual, or full manual overrides. The camera feels it has quality built into it.
3:2 setting sets image size to be perfect for 4x6 prints w/o sacrifice in image quality.
The 2 inch LCD screen is very nice.
The menu system is easy to use and intuitive for the common needs. Some advanced features may require a glance at the manual to fully understand how to use them - especially if you never used a sony digital camera before.
Camera has 32 mb of internal memory. It uses Sony memory stick (all styles except DUO). Note that when using the original (older) sony memory sticks between the new sony & older Sony cameras that the stick will need to be reformatted after being switched between cameras. A minor nuisance - but worthy of noting.
The camera has the ability to crop, resize, and turn the photo on board the camera. No more need to use computer photo software for these routine photo changes!
Lense is a glass Carl Zeiss lense known for its quality. The pictures taken by this camera are very sharp and produce good color rendition.
The zoom is 3x optical and 2x digital. The digital zoom has "smart zoom" technology.
The digital zoom in cameras seem to be a middling feature at best. In this camera, it actually seems usuable. The pictures using digital zoom dont have a grain to them.
The camera has the ability to take movies as well. I dont have much experience with that feature and wont cover it in this review.
It uses two AA batteries. Forget using Alkalines. Get some good rechargables and you will find that they last a good amount time in this camera.
The camera also has an available (optional) docking station, and optional wide angle and telephoto lenses available. Nice to know the camera can grow with you in the future.
The Flash can be manually overridden to turn off, or to lower its burst of light (A nice feature).
Red eye reduction does its job well except when the zoom is in its closest position and you are in a dark room. This is common problem for most zoom cameras.
Focusing system can be switched between manual, automatic single point focusing, or automatic multi point (5 point) focusing.
Several automatic shooting modes are available and seem to do their job well.
Modes: Full Automatic, Full Manual mode, Partial manual mode, ACTION, NIGHT shooting, candlelight shot, Beach (handles reflections off water), SNOW (handles bright whites), Landscape, PORTRAIT, Softsnap (softens pictures - good for portraits), and MACRO/CLOSE UP.
Low battery indicator when using rechargable batteries is a nice feature.
Camera comes with wrist strap, 2 alkaline batteries, cord to hook up to usb, tv rca jacks, and some basic photo software.
I find the camera to be very useful. My wife likes the ease of use and minimal size with large LCD. I like having the ability to manually override some of the automatic features.
The perfect travelling companion for the wife who has a techno-husband!
