"Within it's category, top notch. For special needs outside it's category, a great option."
Pros: Very low noise at low to moderate ISOs.
Cons: It's not an interchangeable lens SLR.
Summary: I use a Canon 20D DSLR. For the price, it's a great camera. The main disadvantage to any SLR, for the kinds of money-making shooting I do (weddings and theater, mostly) is the noisy mirror action.
The Sony DSC-R1 is next on my list, having tested one this week. It'll make an ideal addition to my equipment.
First, being an EVF camera, there is no mirror to make noise or to cause vibration during long exposures.
Second, I'm very tall, and having a top-mounted monitor will allow me to keep the camera at a lower hieght for more natural angle-of-view. It's form factor can simulate either an SLR or a waist-level medium format with a flip of the monitor.
Third, this camera actually has lower noise in the mid-tones at my preffered ISO of 400(not to mention higher resolution) than the 20D.
With the addition of a radio slave on the hot shoe and a battery pack underneath (I'm checking on compatibility of Quantum units now), this will be a nice, functional, versatile, and professional looking piece of gear.
Since the price is about the same as a couple of extra lenses for the Canon, and in the bargain I get a second complete system, this is a no brainer.
