    "VERY disappointed in this camera"

    by brr8760 on March 24, 2006

Pros: Beautiful design, great for showing off to others, tiny and light, fits into any pocket

Cons: Red-eye problems, so-so image quality, focus is terrible

Summary: Since I used the user comments at CNET as my reason to purchase this camera, I felt the need to use this forum to register my utter disappointment in this $400+ investment. Since the positives have been (over) documented here, I'll just talk about the negatives:

    1) RED-EYE DELUXE. I've never seen anything like it. Using the very time-consuming red-eye reduction flash (takes so long most people come out of their pose), one would expect little or no red-eye. NOPE. I hope you are a PAINTER, because you'll be fixing red-eyes on about 75% of your flash subjects.

    2) IMAGE QUALITY. This is 6 megapixels??? You could have fooled me. The quality is "slightly" better than my 2.2 megapixel FujiFilm, but nowhere near what I had expected.

    3) SLOW. Not horribly slow shutter, but slower than I'd like. It's more like "point-shoot-wait a sec-snap"

    4) FOCUS. My older Fuji-film gave me about 85% great focus, this one is about 55% at best. Again, very disappointing.

In fact, after reading all the raves here, and being a very pro-Sony guy, maybe I expected too much. But I wish I'd have bought a different camera. Buyer beware!

Thank you for your review! I found it very helpful and it's good to hear something other than "10 out of 10" reviews. Thank you!

Everyone who slams an ultra compact digicam always has the same gripes: controls too small, no viewfinder, no manual controls, poor low-light performance, etc.

For the love of God, they are ultra compacts afterall. All ultracompacts from all manufacturers have the same flaws; it is only because of their extreme small size.

Sure, there are other small cameras with better features, including viewfinders, but if you look carefully at the specs, THEY ARE LARGER, even the Canon Powershots.

In short, don't slam perfectly good cameras. Keep inmind the limitations of ultra compact cameras AND their target audience: amateur photographers on vacation, who want to, just as their monkier describes, "point and shoot."

If you complain about the lack of viewfinder and professional features, i.e. manual settings, then get an SLR body or larger camera.

Review these ultra compacts for what they are, because as it stands, they are simply too small to have these features that so many complain about a lack thereof.

Next someone will complain about the lack of fisheye and telephoto lenses for compact cameras.

The problems you mentioned are very easily corrected when you know how to appropriatley operate the camera. First, the red-eye phenomenon is going to happen on every ultra-compact out there. As you said, use photoshop or a similiar program to remove this; no more red eye! Next, the picture quality on this program is very good. I have compared this to a number of cameras and everytime the sony comes out on top. If you need any more proof, search other "professional" reviews out there; they all come up with the same conclusion. Next, this camera does not have a slow lag time between shots at all! This is seen in the extensive lab tests that cnet has undergone as well as other review sites. This is one of the fastest cameras out there! Finally, as I have the camera myself, I do not notice any focus issues whatsoever. I get the right shot everytime. Again, I have used this camera extensively and have found that you really need to understand all the settings in order to use it effectively, just as you would with any other equipment. Read the manual and find settings that work for you. Personally, I always use the program mode and I NEVER have any problems with ANY pictures. Always perfect, even in low-lighting indoors and out. Hope this was helpful.
