"Awesome camera!!"4.5 starson by short_bus
Pros: Small, compact, lightweight, large LCD, & 12 MP, who can complain with that!?!?!?
Cons: Proprietary USB connection
Summary: My wife and I were shopping for a new digital camera earlier this year and came across the 10MP version of this camera in the local Best Buy. Wanting to see what else was out there, we later found this camera on Sony’s web site listed for the same price as the 10MP version was in Best Buy, so naturally we went for it.
I can’t say that we’re discouraged in any way. My previous camera was the DSC-P51, 2MP camera, which was considerably larger than this bad boy (and much less powerful). I used the new camera for the first time this weekend and it took some excellent photos. I even trimmed down the resolution to the 5MP setting as I was only interested in printing normal size photos.
The nice thing about the camera settings is that it gives you pointers as to the size photos created with the different resolution settings. It’s also very easy to download photos from the camera even without special software, although the proprietary USB cable needed is a bit clunky. The cable is an all-in-one connection giving you composite audio/video connections as well as a normal PC USB connection.
My Windows XP system immediately identified the camera and installed the necessary drivers. After installation, the camera appeared as a local hard drive and I could copy / move the photos from the memory stick to the PC with normal copy/paste functions.
The face detection function is also pretty cool. When preparing to take a photo with a person(s) in the frame, the camera displays one or many boxes outlining the face(s) in the picture. I know this is just touching the iceberg of features that this camera has to offer, but so far I love it!
