Pros good idea; looks nice
Cons connection problems
Summary I really wanted this device to work as advertised but could not get it to. It was very difficult to get it to stay connected to my network. I asked for help from D-link but got nowhere with their customer reps. It seemed they actually knew little about this product. I finally got it connected and working. The video was fair but choppy. A laptop at the same location has none of these problems. There was also messed up colors on the photo mode using component. After turning the unit off, I could not get a connection the next time I tried using it. As a result, I had to go through the setup again. The software is also intrusive. It takes over the audio and does not switch it back when exiting the program. I sent the unit back for a replacement since the online retailer would not give a refund. And D-Link will do nothing in this regard so I may end up being stuck with a worthless piece of junk. I may just sell it without opening the box. In conclusion, I am very disappointed with this product. Maybe after some more firmware updates and the such, D-link will get it right. If I decide to give the replacement a trial, I'll report back on the results.
Pros I do not have cable and use the product to watch streaming video over the Internet. With my high speed connection, the performance is consistent enough for me. I own 2 DPG-1200 devices.
Cons It is not compatible with Windows 7. I phoned tech support and was told that they are working on bringing it up to this level.
Summary If you are a technical person with a high speed Internet connection, this product works as advertised. It is also a bargain for the price. Fry's Electronics sells it for $99. I read the other reviews, which are very negative. The installation was no more trouble for me than any that involve several components.
Pros when you could get it to work it was nice to control PC with remote
Cons The whole experience from setup to trying to keep it working
Summary I really was excited to order this product for my birthday until I got it out of the box and seen how it operated and the setup of the device. The software would take my display resolution as low as it would go when you started the pc on tv software which the purpose behind that was to try to get the writing on the tv screen large enough where you could read it which the web browser and a lot of other text you couldn't still read. The software would keep saying it could find no PC on TV device on the network when it actually was and I even confirmed by pulling up my router configuration and it showed it connected successfully with and IP adress and etc. assigned to it. When closing the pc on tv application out it would make the computer loose sound to my desktop speakers as well as keep my display resolution at the minimum which gave you the zoomed in affect. I emailed D-Link customer support twice and never have had a response, called tech support numerous times and I keep getting hung up on or I go around in circles them asking the same questions over and over. I think D-Link knows this product is a lemon and they dont have a solution. I think if they could get the software bugs worked out that the device would work great. Please if you are looking to buy this product take my advice who is a Technology Service Specialist DONT BUY IT. I read other reviews from other web sites and I ignored them just thinking that those people didnt know how to properly configure it but I was wrong and they were right....JUNK PRODUCT
Pros A simple network interface for audio/video is exaclty what we need
Cons VERY fickle installation, terrible customer support. MAJOR audio driver problem.
Summary 2 Thumbs up for concept, but certainly not ready for prime time.
The current (March 2009) release version of the DPG-1200 is very fickle, installation can be nightmarish. It reconfigures your audio and video drivers so that in the final step of the installation wizard you can?t even find the finish button! Multiple hits on the ENTER key usually work, but if you panic and default out of the install it is Control Panel time because you are left with no audio, and an 800 x 600 display.
The most subtle but unacceptable problem with the DPG-2100 is the D-Link PC2TV audio driver which emphasizes your low frequency (bass) so severely that you?ll think that there is something very wrong with your stereo, this problem alone puts the DPG on the scrapheap until D-Link gets it figured out.
Also very frustrating is that DPG can?t work transparently on your Ethernet network, and absolutely requires that it be installed behind a router. To access the DPG your computer must connect directly to the same router. Since D-Link doesn?t tell you this you will spend hours talking with technical support agents who readily admit they have no idea how the product is supposed to work.
Once you finally have a working DPG you will be assaulted by frightening, speaker rattling audio performance. Better wait until D-Link gets this puppy figured out..!
Pros Has a great concept, bad bad implementaion!
Cons Software to setup is terrible. Any apps that use video dont work. Dont even think about using it for any real media!
Summary Spent many hours with DLINK tech support going in circles with tech staff. After getting very dizzy being spun in circles, I was told "Hmm that should have worked." No refunds will be given!
