"AVOID AVOID AVOI!!" on by HamptonsGuy27
Pros: NONE! NONE! NONE!
Cons: BAD DESIGN!
Summary: I wish I had read the reviews of this terrible device before I bought it. Here's the deal DO NOT UPGRADE THE FIRMWARE!! I opened up the packaged, connected the device to my wireless network and it immediately asked to upgrade the firmware. I thought "Ok.." so I let it do its thing while I had dinner. Well what I'm left with now is a useless paperweight -- and the DLink tech support is just as useless.
I called them and was DISCONNECTED three times -- I guess outsourcing to India has additional downside to go with not being able to understand anyone! The one person I spoke to was of no use and "elevated" my call to the next level, however, when I was first connected to this higher level person I was disconnected! This was disconnect #2. I called back but after disccnnect #3 I gave up. I took the device completely apart and tried everything to make it work -- removing the CMOS battery, disconnecting the network card, etc. etc.. and no go. This is a TERRIBLE TERRIBLE design flaw and I will send this device back ASAP and research a new device and stay FAR AWAY from DLINK!!
Again, to summarize.. AVOID AVOID AVOID! -
"MAJOR firmware issue (do not buy)" on by avikas
Pros: Easy to read, can add hard drive
Cons: Auto Firmware upgrade destroys unit (unusable)
Summary: I selected this unit over the Roku, because I liked the ability to add a hard disk.
The features in this unit are excellent, BUT it will automatically try to upgrade its firmware over the network, and this WILL RENDER THIS UNIT USELESS. You will not be able to reset or do anything with this unit except send it back.
I tried 2 units, and had the same issue with both. It is too new, with very little support even on DLink's web site, and until they either acknowledge this problem on their web site and describe a fix for it, they should simply take these units off the market instead of wasting the consumer's time and effort. -

"Good value for the price" on by jravenea
Pros: The optional HD which allows listening to music without a PC
Cons: Radios limited to live365.com content. Poor user interface.
Summary: The great differenciator of this device is the optional HD so you can store up to 30Gb of music directly on it and don't have to turn your PC on each time you want to listen to music.
Also access to HD content is a little faster than access to streamed music.
In one location, despite a strong signal, I experienced wireless drops. I moved the device on a higher shelf and wireless works perfectly now.
Two things bother me:
1. The user interface is poor. All you can do is scrolling, there is no shortcut key to move directly to a letter. Most annoying when you have hundreds of titles to scroll through.
2. Also radio content is limited to live365.com which is pooooor... Roku is much much better in this regard. But doesn't provide the HD.
I had NO problem with the firmware upgrade. However I did wire-connect while upgrading as I knew a wireless drop during the process would tank the device.
I tried to play music from a USB flash drive once, it froze the DSM120. I assumed it was because I had some non-music content on the USB but didn't try further. -
"Works like It Should but needs an easy way to look for songs" on by etcruz
Pros: Easy to connect, Many outputs including optical. Hard Disk
Cons: Difficult to use with extensive music libraries.
Summary: I like this product. The ergonomics are fantastic, the screen is big and bright, It's easy to connect to the wireless network and if you don't wireless no problem it has a Ethernet Port. What really surprised me about the DSM-120 is that you can install a 2.5" hard disk (only 32GB) and keep your music collection permanently on the device. This is great as you can use it connected to your PC or can add some amplified speakers or wireless headphones and take it with you anywhere.
The only drawback that I found is that if you have a big collection of music it is very time consuming to look for the songs. Dlink should have included in their software the ability to look for the song by pressing letters instead finding them one by one or page by page . Lets say I want to listen to Led Zeppelin I press the letters "Le" and artist's starting with that letters come up to the screen. The same apply for the songs. It is a let down that such a good product doesn't include this option. Other than that is the perfect Wireless Media player and I will recommend it to anybody.
