While the digital audio receiver (DAR) category has seen significant price erosion over the past six months, Prismiq's MediaPlayer is the first DAR we've tested with a sweet-spot combination of value and features. At $249, the MediaPlayer comes with everything you need to stream audio, video, and photo slide shows over a wired network. Better yet, you can easily add compatibility with all three wireless-networking protocols using one of several off-the-shelf PCMCIA cards.

Editor's note: We have changed the rating in this review to reflect recent changes in our rating scale. Click here to find out more.

Thanks to its black, plastic casing and scant dimensions (9 by 1.5 by 5.25 inches), the MediaPlayer will blend easily into most home-entertainment systems. The front panel is vacant except for a few text labels and four status LEDs that beam through the translucent black faceplate.

As the MediaPlayer itself doesn't have any buttons or knobs, you control the unit with either the included remote or the optional $50 wireless keyboard. The remote's Home, Video, Audio, Images, Web, and Chat buttons provide direct access to the TV-based interface's main menus. The analog directional pad and its neighboring Select key facilitate straightforward point-and-click navigation. The keyboard, necessary for surfing the Net and chatting on AOL, duplicates the remote's controls.

The included CD-ROM contains the MediaManager software. We installed it on our PC, launched it, and followed prompts to build its media library. Then we connected the application to our TV and stereo, inserted a Netgear MA401 802.11b PCMCIA card into the slot, plugged in the machine, and turned it on. Like most recent DARs, the MediaPlayer was easy to configure on our DHCP network, in which a router autoassigns IP addresses. After we had completed a few simple onscreen steps, the MediaPlayer was ready for use.

The MediaPlayer handles MP3 and WAV audio files; JPEG images; and video in AVI, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4/DivX, and VOB. It can stream music from Internet radio stations that use the PLS playlist format. Prismiq pledges that firmware and software updates will add support for more file types.

MediaManager deftly organizes your PC's files into video, audio, Internet radio, and image subcategories that are mirrored on the TV interface. The My Custom Info tab allows you to configure the Home screen to display personalized items such as Web bookmarks, local weather reports, and stock quotes. Unlike Escient's Fireball and X10's Lola, the MediaPlayer doesn't retrieve CD artwork from the Net.

In terms of connectivity, the MediaPlayer is well equipped. On the back panel, you get one set of RCA analog-audio outputs and one out each for digital audio (coaxial), S-Video, and composite video. Also at the rear are an Ethernet port and a PCMCIA slot for wireless cards. A firmware update released during our evaluation enabled support for higher-bandwidth 802.11g and 802.11a cards, validating Prismiq's forward-thinking, upgradable design. You can find a list of compatible network cards on Prismiq's Web site.

At $249, the MediaPlayer currently rules the DAR category with its price-to-features ratio. A few models that cost about the same have off-the-shelf wireless capability, but most are without the all-important TV-based user interface and video streaming. For the sake of comparison, check out Cd3o's C300 and RCA's $99 Using the wireless 802.11b card, the MediaPlayer delivered excellent audio streaming. Photo slide shows were similarly smooth. More impressive, however, was the surprisingly good wireless video streaming. Few of our MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 test files suffered jerky playback, so the extra bandwidth you'd get with the 802.11a and 802.11g wireless standards would be more insurance than necessity.

Web surfing was the MediaPlayer's weakest link. Despite our broadband connection, pages loaded more slowly than they do on a PC. And navigation felt a little sluggish, though in fairness, we have the same issue with other Internet set-top boxes, such as Microsoft's WebTV. Using the optional keyboard to chat via AOL Instant Messenger felt more natural.

Our MediaPlayer came preconfigured to stream nine Internet radio stations. To help you find more, the user guide suggests some access sites, but of those, Shoutcast alone offers a large number of usable stations, and Live365 has only selections incompatible with MediaManager. Prismiq says it will fix the problem with the next software update, which should be out in a few weeks. Once you've located the URL of a compatible station, adding it to MediaManager is a drag-and-drop affair, just as with PC-based media files.

The MediaPlayer and the wireless access point can be in different rooms, but the range and the quality will depend on the thickness of your walls, the competing RF signals in your home, and other factors. One wall and about 30 feet separated our unit and transmitter, and we didn't have any problems.

Donate to charity instead of buying this device

Pros: There are no pros for this product

Cons: Everything about Prismiq is terrible

Review: I had (and still have) a Prismiq and it is the worst money I have ever spent. It wasn't capable of streaming anything tolerable except for radio stations and even those would be interrupted by loud digital noise every 5-10 minutes (both cable and 802.11g wireless).

Later it crashed and would not boot. I had to spend more money and buy a keyboard from Prismiq in order to restore the system.

If I didn't have a conscience, I would have tried to sell it on eBay in 2004 after buying it, but instead I kept it on a shelf never to be used again. I should just throw it out, but the thought of the $250+ I spent has still kept me from doing it :(.

Cheap, but you'll pay for it in frustration and time.

Pros: Does work with still pictures and audio

Cons: Video is virtually useless

Review: Have spent countless hours trying to get a consistent result with .avi, mpeg1,2,4, DVIX with very poor results. Have a 2.5GHZ dedicated server, but the Media Manager software is truly sad. Reminds me of PC networking ca. 1980's. The concept is great and the hub itself is rather clever, but the PC based software is abyssmal.

Pros: Works well with ethernet

Cons: Crap with wireless unless you are under the router

Review: After I bought two wireless cards they had to send me one that worked. The ones on their list of "approved cards" didn't work. It seemed to work ok when wired but when I moved it away from the router via wireless, it was ok for internet but music was garbage.

How can anyone endore this POS!?

Pros: What it finds on your HDD it'll play, but beyond that there's not much to like

Cons: Where to start...well, I guess by saying that it doesn't work as advertised.

Review: The software that accompanies this unit is so primitive and ineffective it's beyond me how it could even be released. After working the the Prismiq customer service reps on numerous occasions trying to get the wireless cards to work (two that I bought new and one that Prismiq sent me), I eventually freaked out and simply ran CAT 6 cable. I will compliment the customer service reps I worked with. They were very patient and cooperative, and it's not their fault that they're forced to deal with a media streamer that simply doesn't deliver.

Like I said in my 'Pros' comments, the content that the software (Prismiq MediaManager) does find and import does seem to play just fine. The problem for me is that it seems to randomly skip over all sorts of content. None of it is copy-protected or tainted in any way, it's just as if it's not even there. For example, I have roughly 5,000 mp3s on my computer, and after allowing MediaManager to scan my system it only found about 2700. ***!?!

Anyway, don't waste your money. Wait until these companies figure out how to build a good medai streamer, cause if you buy this one you'll end up with a sour taste in your mouth that's tough to get rid of.

Never Pay this kind of $$$ w/o CD Cover Art

Pros: It looks nice and comes with remote

Cons: Cover Art and Lyrics are mandatory

Review: I have not even bothered to read the rest of this review as this is an UNFORGIVABLE feature when paying this much money! I refuse to buy ANY Media Players that do not have this very important feature or some kind of internet look up using Grace Note or other CD & Cover Art database at a minimum!!
A subscription to online vendors sort of fill the hole, but for even more money that is already too much for what you get!!

hugely over-rated

Pros: Has wireless capability-supposedly

Cons: could not watch real or windows media files

Review: I was surprised by the CNET editors rating of this device. Having received the device, it took me weeks to reconfigure my wireless network so that the device could be recognized. The tech suport is ABYSMAL; takes hours to get through, and then the tech reads from a manual to help solve the problem. The tech support then told me my problem was too difficult for the manual and that I was being moved to the "second level." What a joke! I never heard back from them. None of the very limited instruction manual tells you you can't watch any Real or Windows media video files. After weeks of battling with the thing, I sent it back. Do not buy from these people!

Best among other media players

Pros: has web browser,

Cons: UI need to be polished a bit more

Review: I tried a few different brand media player (or called digital media adpater, whatever). Prismiq's offers the best quality and relaibility of multi-media streaming.

And it's the only one media player has the web browser. But you can't expect it works as IE, of course....

Good cheap streaming

Pros: Cheap; simple interface; quality sound

Cons: No local buffering so wireless streaming doesn't work

Review: I bought this to use for streaming my mp3 collection, and it serves the purpose very well. I was disappointed that the wireless streaming was unreliable because I had to punch an ethernet cable through my wall. Once that was done, streaming was perfect. Also very nice for viewing videos and pictures stored on your hard drive. Once again, forget about videos unless you hard wire it.

Good appliance that tries to do too much

Pros: wireless streaming music and TV in G, UPnP support for RealPlayer Rhapsody, relatively stable wireless IF there is nothing between the router and the box

Cons: internet surfing is useless without keyboard, streaming video can be touch-and-go, remote signal can be jumpy

Review: I've been pretty happy with this device. I have mine wirelessly linked with a PCMCIA G card - nifty feature I haven't seen anywhere else. I initially had a ton of interference playing back music and video playback was impossible. I get a solid signal throughout my house - my laptop never drops the signal - but the PRISMIQ, while close to the router and with practically nothing physically obstructing the signal, it would drop at times and video playback would literally lock the darned thing up forcing me to unplug it.

An antenna extension for my router seems to have improved things dramatically though.

Complaints - poor level 2 support from the company. That and the lack of support for WMA / WMV or RMS file formats for video means big fat MPEG files that aren't compatible with services like Movielink for video on demand.

The one subscription service they are VERY compatable with is Rhapsody. The addition of this service turns the PRISMIQ into a 800,000 song music libary - very cool if you're willing to shell out the $10 a month for access.

Overall a decent product, but I'm thinking it would have been easier to go wireless with the PC video signal to the TV instead.

Good for audio and video, bad for browsing.

Pros: Streams audio and video well with ethernet connection. Internet radio is nice. Connection and set up is simple. Remote control works well.

Cons: Browser is lame compared to what you're used to. Setting up playlists can be a hassle. No LCD display to view content. No component video out.

Review: I use the Prismiq mainly for streaming audio via an ethernet connection. I've also used it to view recorded video from my PC's t.v. tuner and to view digital photos. In all three cases it works well. The Prismiq is ideal if you have a huge collection of music that you don't want to burn onto CD's to play in your main listening area. The one fault I have with video is that you can't fast forward/rewind in the traditional way (it does a "burst" fast forward/rewind, e.g. if you press fast forward it'll skip to about 30 secs ahead). The browser is pretty useless. It's slow, not too graphical, and not to what you're used to. It's good for quick weather or stock reports.
You point the Media Manager software to scan your media directory and it sets up playlists based on file folders. This can be a hassle as you may have to restructure your file folders. There is no LCD display on the unit and therefore you have to always turn the t.v. on to view content, which is user-unfriendly if you just want to listen to music right away. Lastly, there is no component video output, which some newer mediaplayers have. Overall, the Prismiq does an adequate job at streaming audio, video, and photos. If you can tolerate the small quirks and don't need a browswer, then this is a pretty good buy if you want to enjoy listening to music, viewing photos and video in your main media room. Otherwise, you may have to wait for the do-all, perfect mediaplayer to show up.

Fantastic Product!

Pros: Great at streaming audio.

Cons: Images lack HD quality.

Review: This is a great product. Despite what some other reviews state here, it was very easy to setup and network. The only difficulty I had was with my Windows XP Firewall. Tech Support at Prismiq was adequate, not stellar by any means, in resolving this small problem. If you have any kind of basic knowledge of computers, you should be able to network this product pretty readily. Just be certain to use a wireless router that is compatible with the Prismiq. There is a list of compatible routers provided with the unit. It is not rocket science here, people.

As for the audio quality, it is fantastic. Just be sure that the bitrate of your files is at least 128 kbps, otherwise you will get some distortion and interruptions.

Digital images are good. However, if you really want High Def quality (and have an HDTV to view them on), you may want to consider the new ROKU Photo Bridge HD.

Pros: I guess its OK for a quick solution.

Pros: This is conceptually a very ideal device for anyone with large amounts of media that they wish to listen to or view on their television. But a product cannot stand on its concept alone, it needs execution.

The Most Important Device In Two Years

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I won't rehash or refute the downsides nor glorify the ups. I will say that there have been very few really cool and compelling technologies released during the past few years; perhaps none. What I will do is explain why this device is a most critically important device. It rescues those of us under the weight of too much data. It provides a reasonable mechanism to present your stuff to friends and family. The PRISMIQ pulls your data to the place you are living on a device where people are used to focusing with a data source worth maintaining. The old way, huddled around the computer screen reviewing photos with friends and family, bragging about your music collection and then playing it on a computer. Not natural. It is hard to be casual while simply sharing something simple. It has always been too easy to focus on the computer and loose the data. See the cursor change color while missing the amazing sunset. Now, the TV, well, it's an old friend. It makes the data easy for all to consume. It let’s you bring the content to you because it is invisible. The computers, perhaps rooms away, makes it easy for us to store and backup and arrange and review; when we are alone in the quite of our own tents, not in front of the audience. So, fair product review? Not at all...it’s more an appeal to understand the importance of network centric device that brings the new stuff to an old friend. Should you buy one? Probably you should. They are stupid-cheap for what they do, the people at the Company love where they work and what they are making and the support is pretty damn good.

Pros:

Cons:

Review: I ordered the unit online and received an email of my order comfirmation the next morning. I received another email the same day that the oprder had shipped and the Fedex traccking number. The order even arrived a day earlier then expected. I received the unit and hooked it up in no time. I had some issues with the unit and had to call tech support (10:30pm pst). They answered the phone within 1 minute and we walked through all of the issues (most were my issues). I also email them twice in the same night and they responded within minutes. The bottom line is that I had a problem with the ethernet port and the next I had an email waiting for me stating that they had shipped the replacement out FEDEX 2nd. They never even asked me for the serial number to my original unit or a credit card. Now thats customer service!!!!! As for features and performance. It play MP3 great and the browser seems to be good enough to browser standard sites like MSN.com. I like to home page because it gives you news, persoanl area weather, and stock quotes, all of which can be customized. This is my second day to own the unit and just last night a ne wversion of the firmware became available that enabled the unit to view your Photos. I think this product is still a little young, but I can't wait for it to growup. If the company and the support continue to be this good, they'll own the market before long! I was tired of being locked in my home office enjoying all this content, and it wasn't really feasible to bring friends and family to huddle around my PC to share it. I wanted it all in my living room...PRISMIQ did it for me. On the second day I had a small technical issue...it turned out to be with my Linksys wireless system, but the guy at PRISMIQ tech support walked me through it. Pros:

Cons:

Review: This is a great set top box, especially for an adventurous early adopter such as myself. Everyone here is correct about the immaturity of the software, but I think it will be fun to watch Prismiq upgrade it to match the hardware. If the software can reach 75% of the hardware’s potential, then I'll be more than satisfied. As for setup, I give it TWO BIG THUMBS UP! I unwrapped it, plugged it in (network is cat5 to a router with DHCP) and surfed, including reading my Yahoo! Mail. I then downloaded the latest software from the web site, installed it, and pointed it at my music folder. After the required upgrade of the box’s firmware (it will crash if you don’t,) I was playing MP3s -- with a digital output to the receiver -- using the included wireless keyboard -- choosing songs on the TV’s screen. Nice. For reference, here’s a partial list of toys which each took significantly longer to get working: Audiotron, Rio Receiver, HP200e DVD+RW drive, Hawking Tech 802.11b AP PC Card and Access Point, ReplayTV, assorted X-10 Lighting stuff, Siemens Gigaset 2420 (its replacement, the 8825, has worked flawlessly.) If you’re interested, my Audiotron will be on eBay soon.

Read Reviews but Wait on Buying!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Wait, wait, wait. Read the reviews. Software, support - all not worth the trouble today. The product is still considered pre-release if you ask current customers. Customer service is not customer focused at all - the attitude is you are lucky to be customer and get one. This is what kills it IMHO. With new products, most can take the good with the bad but the Customer Service makes you want to send it back and wait for their competition to release a product. The browser was not included to surf the web; just to display very basic web sites only. They say it is not a core feature - then remove it. Summary is wait/dont buy or be willing to put up with limited features, bad support, and a possible future with upgrades.

If you download mp3’s and videos, this is for you!!

Pros:

Cons:

Review: This company got such a hot buzz at CES, I had to try it. Well, it coast $250! I’m not a novice when it comes to networking, but with this device anyone can install it, very easy. Literally took me 5 minuets to connect the Ethernet, Svideo, and an audio cable… oh yea, power to the box. That’s it!! Well the price and install were both great, but the reason I love this box is the concept. Basically, I have a great computer with over 80 gigs of mp3s, and mpeg videos (music videos, movies, xxx, and TV shows that I’ve recorded using my TV card on my computer). What I hate is moving or copy my digital entertainment to another device (it takes toooo much time, and it’s unnecessary duplication of my files), but with this prismiq box, it was all good. The Prismiq box does not have a hard drive; it uses my computer hard drive over my network to display my videos and music in my living room or bed room. How simple, how smart!! The one thing that I hope they keep improving is on the software side, which seems to be the case sense I’ve already gotten a free software and firmware upgrade. Keep up the good work Prismiq!

Wait a while... until they get their act together

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Great concept, poor execution. The software is incredibly limited - functions like fast forward barely work (it's faster to let the video run than hit the fast forward button and you can't track how far forward you're moving without stopping and letting it catch up). Playlist importing works fine, but you can't do anything with it once it's imported (shuffle, repeat, etc). Doesn't handle video formats other than MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 yet. Windows Media, avi, divx;) and Quicktime need to be added quickly, but they don't provide a timeline. Service was awful - I never got a single e-mail saying my order was accepted, payment processed, shipped or any other contact. Repeated calls to their office were finally returned saying it was about to be shipped. But still no e-mail or tracking number - it just showed up a few days later. Web browsing doesn't seem to support java applets and other things - only basic html browsing. If it does more than that, there's no info available for troubleshooting. Website is incredibly lacking in any support functions - no real troubleshooting available. Fortunately set up was easy, but 'Help' means more than just giving you access to another copy of the User Manual... Even if you're an 'early adopter' - hold back for a while. This isn't going to satisfy you. I can do more with a scan converter and a wireless keyboard.

Software Needs ALOT of Work

Pros:

Cons:

Review: Actually, I recommend this product but with many reservations. The hardware itself is pretty solid - 18 bit sound with digital and S-video outs. At present it doesnt support MPEG4 however, supposedly a software update is forthcoming. Setup was very straightforward. What lets the package down is the media manager software - its absolutely terrible! You are so limited in organizing your mp3's that it makes this thing almost unusable. An example of how bad it is - when creating a playlist you cannot select multiple tracks. Come on guys - you have a great product, put some effort into the whole package and you could have a real giant killer. Right now Prismiq has the edge simply because they are the first to market, as far as I know. But what happens when Sony or Phillips introduces their products? I'm all for supporting small companies but this is a shame - the product could have been SO much better. Soon , hopefully, they'll release some software thats half decent - I hope so for their sakes.

Cons:

Needs some cleanup of the code, yes it looks pretty but not really functional. Don't pay for overnight shipping because they will wait a week to send it out, they will not answer the phone or your emails either. The front page will give you headlines, however no links to the storys. Don't get me wrong, if you are willing to wait for the software this WILL be one heck of a toy however don't buy this today thinking it's a Tivo like device, It's not.... Yet. Hopefully someone with some experience in the channel will help these guys out, they have a great idea however it's not ready for the mass market.
