"Good for audio and video, bad for browsing."

by LandoVengian on March 8, 2005

Pros: Streams audio and video well with ethernet connection. Internet radio is nice. Connection and set up is simple. Remote control works well.

Cons: Browser is lame compared to what you're used to. Setting up playlists can be a hassle. No LCD display to view content. No component video out.

Summary: I use the Prismiq mainly for streaming audio via an ethernet connection. I've also used it to view recorded video from my PC's t.v. tuner and to view digital photos. In all three cases it works well. The Prismiq is ideal if you have a huge collection of music that you don't want to burn onto CD's to play in your main listening area. The one fault I have with video is that you can't fast forward/rewind in the traditional way (it does a "burst" fast forward/rewind, e.g. if you press fast forward it'll skip to about 30 secs ahead). The browser is pretty useless. It's slow, not too graphical, and not to what you're used to. It's good for quick weather or stock reports.
You point the Media Manager software to scan your media directory and it sets up playlists based on file folders. This can be a hassle as you may have to restructure your file folders. There is no LCD display on the unit and therefore you have to always turn the t.v. on to view content, which is user-unfriendly if you just want to listen to music right away. Lastly, there is no component video output, which some newer mediaplayers have. Overall, the Prismiq does an adequate job at streaming audio, video, and photos. If you can tolerate the small quirks and don't need a browswer, then this is a pretty good buy if you want to enjoy listening to music, viewing photos and video in your main media room. Otherwise, you may have to wait for the do-all, perfect mediaplayer to show up.

The Prismiq MediaPlayer is good at sending & playing MP3's & photos wirelessly from your computer to your TV. Surfing the web could use some improvement. The compatibility list of network adapter cards is not accurate. Prismiq support is very helpful.
