"Good and bad"
on by tbowen2011Pros Unit easy to install. Picture and sound good.
Cons HDMI connection very querky - The box locks up each day at least once. Support does not see the problem. They send email reply to me however, they send stock generic answers to problems I don't have.
Summary I guess I will have to return the unit and try another company. Simply because the support does not want to deal with what seems to be a defective unit.

"OK, but problems setting up"
on by brassinpocketPros Works pretty well streaming netflix
Inexpensive compared to other options (boxee, google, appletv)Cons Many problems connecting to network
Sometimes doesn't respond to remote controlSummary It took two days to be able to connect to the network. Did multiple hard/soft reboots. I was literally about to return to the manufacturer when, after yet one more reboot, it finally was able to connect to the roku main server and register. Now it seems to run pretty well. However, sometimes when accessing the channel store the box seems to get "confused"/non-responsive. For the price it gives a very nice way to view netflix (my main reason to buy this). Perhaps I'll use for huluplus eventually if their prices come down!
However, my initial experiences make me a little concerned that I may have got something that might fail at some point.
My initial connect connection problems seem somewhat similar to those of javaaddict's, except that my system was finally able to connect to the network. It's discouraging to see the responses to javaaddict's review. Just because your system works doesn't mean somebody else's doesn't! (Or maybe someone is trying to suppress bad reviews??) -
"Worthless - could not connect!!"
on by gndowellPros None - couldn't use it.
Cons Unable to install, even after connecting to wifi.
Summary Do not buy this. thank goodness I bought through amazon which gave me a refund. Looking into other options.
May go to apple tv -
"Time consuming Customer support"
on by msusanm53Pros Great channels available
Cons Dire Customer support
Summary Received my Roku, set it up and watched it for approximately 1 hour. When I awoke the next morning, it was dead. Called the Customer Support line and was asked numerous questions in broken Engish about my care and feeding of the device. After an extended period of being of hold at least three times, they decided to send me a new power cord. That took 5 days to arrive. Tried it out immediately; the Roku was still dead. Called a second time, was again queried closely and at length, in broken English, about the device. After another period of reflection and being put on hold for extended periods, they decided to send me another Roku which should arrive in three days, at least.
My sense is that its good to set aside sufficient time in your calendar for these calls before buying a Roku. Nothing in Heaven or Earth can persuade them to vary from their script or to not place you on hold for ages, at least twice.
I hope the replacement they send to me works--I quail at the thought of having to call them yet again. My vacation time is about used up. -
"If you need Caption/Subtitles DO NOT PURCHASE"

Cons No subtitles support for hearing impairment
Summary Very disappointing! For those of you with hearing impairments, subtitles are not support by Roku first generation. The Roku Customer help suggested to buy the Roku 2. I just paid $80 less than a month ago, and this crappy company can not update the software in the Roku 1 to support subtitles. What a shame! Probably they are partner with Netflix, who do not care either about their customers, just to take advantage of them, in this bad economy.
