"Finally! Laptop to TV without wires!"

5 stars  | on by goingnutsinbrooklyn

Pros

This product sends my audio and video to my tv just like I had hoped. It really is the solution I wanted. Before I had cables going from my receiver accross my living room to my computer. Now just a tiny box in my cabinet.

Cons

Video quality suffers a little going to big screen.

Some lag but video and sound stay in sync so not really a problem.

Summary

If you want to have wireless transfer from computer to TV this is it.

Relatively cheap
Plays practically every file
Simple to set up and use
Works great with NAS

Cons

Rewind and fast forward are buggy and don't always work
Not great for music, no "shuffle" mode or continuous play

I use the SlingCatcher to stream video files from my Network Attached Storage Drive to my TV in the bedroom. I bought it during a flash sale on Amazon.com for $99, which is a steal compared to any other device that would perform the same task. I've been using the device for about 3 months now and am happy with the purchase. Set up was quick and simple and it has played every file I've thrown at it so far. My only disappointment is that the fast forward and rewind features don't seem to function properly and if I try to use them, it starts my video from the beginning.

"Excellent slingbox and other PC media extender"

4 stars  | on by _M_M_

Pros

Slingcatcher works perfectly (as advertised)?I receive an excellent picture and sound when linked to my slingbox in the US while I?m overseas.

Cons

Nothing a few firmware and software updates can't fix, improve on, or even add new capabilities which I hope they do?at the new reduced cost of $130 (from slingmedia.com) it is a good product however at the much higher original price of $300-no way!

OK ? my comments are directed to the 1 or no star reviews? This product will and does work great. You absolutely need/require sufficient bandwidth on both sides ? sending and receiving when slinging outside of your home or away from the physical slingbox location. You do need to know a little bit about networking, routers, and UNC paths, plus network share permissions to fully utilize everything this product can and should be able to do. I think that this product can and will need some improvements just in a few areas such as advance routing capabilities, and more specifically the remote driven menu is a bit limiting. Adding a remote http admin console for this similar to ones imbedded in routes, etc? would be outstanding. This way I can configure it via any PC on my network via any internet browser and IP address, plus login credentials. Advance features and configurations such as an option to set connection priorities i.e. being able to point my slingcatcher to a specific IP address, or select to log into my slingbox account and find it that way. I have a unique network to include geographically separated subnets connected via VPN tunnels through the internet. The Slingplayer, SlingProjector software and Slingcatcher only scans the local subnet for devices and slingboxes and by being able to enter an internal IP address on a different subnet I would be able to stream from my slingbox to me devices and software via VPN tunnels without having to establish a DMZ or port forwarding on my firewalls reducing network intrusion and risk.
