    "The OS sucks"

    by CR_Magruder on September 3, 2007

Pros: The 800 x 600 display resoultion is good to great; the frame is (allegedly) ebony and does not look like cheap plastic, like many others; and the Labor-Day sale price of $130.

Cons: The USB interface (memory stick or cable-to-PC) did not work at all.

Summary: Here is my review that I posted on the Best Buy web site:

The technical specifications indicate that you can transfer files via a USB cable or USB memory stick. Neither of these methods worked for me. The on-screen menus would not let me access the memory stick.

When I tried to connect to the PC through the USB cable, the PC gave me the "USB device not recognized" finger. I am using Windows XP Home edition. When I re-booted the picture frame again, the on-screen menu tree would not come up at all.

So I took it back to the store with my memory stick in hand. The customer service desk person was nice enough about exchanging the picture frame for another one. But I wanted to make sure it would work before I left the store. Then the clerk did not want to look very hard for a place to plug the unit in and said that the only place she could find was at a counter that was too far away for me to reach it. So I had to tell her what buttons to push and what steps to try next. Becasue of the communication lag, I was not sure if the new picture frame was working with my USB stick or not, so I got frustrated and left with the exchanged picture frame.

I got it home and when the new one worked just like the old one, I was pretty sure I had just bought another piece of c**p made in China, where quality control means "just ship anything we make-- the Americans will buy it". So I tried one more thing. I put the files on an XD memory card and plugged it into the port and rebooted the picture frame. And whaddya know, it goes right into the slide show.

On the plus side, I am happy with the 800 x 600 resoultion and the appearance of the digital pictures. The slide show software takes care of portrait orientations without me doing anything, which is nice. The ebony wood frame is nice and does not look like a cheap plastic art deco imitation that is on most of the other similar frames.

However, I'm ticked off that I have to buy a memory card to make it work, when it already has 128MB of on-board memory which I cannot write to. I am also a little frustrated that the customer service person was so passive about making sure that the unit was working. I realize that they cannot be an expert in everything they sell, but to see two units in a row that are not performing as advertised should raise some concern.

I would wait a few more months to buy one of these. I am hoping that the free market will cause some competition for higher quality.

Plug it directly into the computer. Do not go through a hub. I had the same issue but if I plug it in the computer it works fine.

I was delighted to receive the Photo Frame as a surprise birthday gift from the grandkids...was looking forward to setting up a slide show from the many pix I have stored on my PC. Imagine my disappointment in not being able to use the USB connection.

I sent a question into their customer support link on the web 10/8/07 and we'll see what response (if any) I get.

Menu is crude interface as well...

Will try memory card from wife's new camera when she gets home...so far very disappointed!

Just checking but did you plug the USB cable from the frame directly to the computer? Because from what I've read, you can't have anything in between like a hub.

I've read that Philips makes the best photo frame OS interface (featuring nifty details like auto portrait/landscape when you turn the frame), but they're kind of pricey ($65 differential at Amazon) and don't have as high a resolution as this Westinghouse.
