"Shame on DirecTV"on by szacherau
Pros Not one I can think of
Cons Total software and hardware failure
Summary I have owned DVRs for about 10 years. I love Replay, I like Tivo but when DirecTV released a dual tuner that held 100 hours I had to try it. Well this is the worst consumer product I have ever owned. The software is abysmal and the hardware is totally unreliable. My first one stopped working after 95 days which is 5 days after the warranty. Nice 90 day warranty DirecTV! They sent me a new one at no charge which stopped working in about 5 months. No instant 30 second skip, No auto backup on fast forward stop. I plan on switching to Dish Networks thanks to the horror of this product.
"Don't buy this junk"on by lkopel
Pros I can't think of one.
Cons Everything about it.
Summary I own two Directv Tivo units, Sony and Hughes. I needed a third and bought this from Directv. This is crap compared to a Tivo. No accuracy in fast forward or rewind, needs to be reset at least every couple of days. "Channels I get" doesn't work. Directv promises upgrades to fix the problems, delivers them late, then the new patches screw something else up. Buy a used Tivo. That's what I'm going to do.
Pros Free with our service, works well
Cons Sometimes difficult to "record series"
Summary We have a newer device, it stores about 200 hours of TV material. You can search for a TV show and "record series" and it will pull down 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, or all episodes of a TV series. From a convenient "List" key on the remote, you can scroll through recorded shows and it highlights ones you haven't seen before, in a 2-level menu (show name, episode names when you click on the show name.)
All in all, it's a very competant DVR and the price we paid (free with our service) means that we're very satisfied with this DVR.
It implements PIP so that you can watch and hear a show in the upper right corner while you program the DVR - a big advantage, imho, as we have an older TV.
You can double click on the '-' key to delete shows, a useful shortcut.
Would give it 10 stars, but a few features seem missing, like easy access to the show recording prioritizer, a 1-button access to the guide (currently its 2-buttons), and a fast way to 'goto' a particular page of the guide (currently can only scroll up/down by 8 channels, there is a need for 40 or 80 channel up/down scrolling.)
Pros cant think of anything postive
Cons The unit itself
Summary I am waiting on another R15 replacement receiver, the first one just stopped working, the second would freeze up during playback of recorded shows, and they sent me a replacement receiver and it couldn't get a signal from the remote unless you were less than 5 feet in front of the reciever. So now im waiting on yet another replacement.
Pros None that I can think of, and I tried hard.
Cons This dvr receiver is a complete joke.
Summary I leased one of these things from Direct TV
and it had to be replaced after only two months because one of the unit's two tuners quit working. This thing is slow and clunky to use. When you push the button to change channels you can go to the kitchen, get a coke, and come back before the channel actually changes (that's a slight exageration, but that's how it feels). It's like the Yugo of dvr's.
