"DirecTV DVR (R15) BLOWS!"1.0 starson by calljb1023
Pros: Quick delete by pressing "dash" button twice; SeriesLink setup by pushing Record button twice.
Cons: Everything Else!
Summary: I have both a TIVO and the new DirecTV DVR and I have to say, the TIVO blows the R15 out of the water!
Here are a few of my major gripes (TIVO vs. R15):
TIVO is straightforward and intuitive. With the R15, I feel like I need a printed map on hand to find anything. I will throw the R15 a couple of bones here though. The ability to delete an already viewed program by hitting the “dash” button twice is nice. Also, being able to SeriesLink by pressing the Record button twice is cool as well.
TIVO is fast on all counts (Guide browsing, List browsing, Keyword searching). The R15 is tortoise by comparison with excruciating lags on all fronts.
TIVO beats R15 hands down. The most aggravating of these controls is the lack of fast forward response. When stopped, the TIVO backs up a few seconds which generally puts you close to the point you wanted to watch. The R15, by contrast, continues forward until it decides to stop, causing me to rewind in terms of minutes to get to the point I want to watch.
Absolutely atrocious. I set most of my SeriesLink choices to record first run only. I have yet to have this work! SeriesLink will just record whatever it finds of that particular title. (You don’t know how many times I’ve had to clear out old episodes, some even from 2 years ago, from my “first run only” SeriesLink selections!). When you set TIVO Season Pass to record first run only, that is exactly what you get!
Another SeriesLink aggravation is the fact that you can’t alter the show parameters unless there are upcoming episodes of that show. I have a show that I SeriesLink’ed. I noticed it was getting cut off at the end, so I wanted to alter the settings. To my dismay, I discovered that, because no new shows were upcoming, I couldn’t touch it. I had to wait 2 weeks (when it came up on the To Do list) so I could alter the settings! In TIVO, your Season Pass choices are stored and the settings can be altered at any time.
Access to Stored Programs:
Ok… so on rare occasions, I forget to pay my bill on time. Things get away from me and I just plain space out. All of a sudden, my service isn’t working and I have to scramble online and pay my bill. That is my bad and I will own up to it. Here however, is my gripe when comparing TIVO with the R15. On my TIVO system, I can still bring up all the programs I had recorded. *I get locked out of all recorded programs on the R15!* DirecTV may like this, but I do find it a bit unfair as I am still a paying customer and I recorded these programs when service was on.
SO… all being said, I still really like DirecTV and will keep on being a subscriber of their service. However, they *have got* to something about this lousy DVR offering! I don’t know if it’s a matter of software upgrade or policy, but I really hope that there are improvements in store.
