"Doesn't meet my requirements"1.5 starson by hansenbrian
Pros: Nice interface, pretty menus, one button recording, program grouping, 100 hour storage, bulk delete function, great remote
Cons: Does not buffer on both inputs, 50 season passes max, no wishlists, poor season pass setup process, poor season pass priority process, interface got extremely slow over time, randomly misses recording
Summary: Wow, I ran out of characters in the Cons section of this form.
In effort to not abuse the rating system I give it a 3 because it's better than nothing I guess. Even though I want to give it zero so bad to stick it to DirecTV.
Many people compare this to TiVo. Thats not the biggest issue here, rather it just sucks as a DVR in general. TiVo set the bar high and they have a great product so many people look for these things in a DVR. Comparing to TiVo is unfair because DTV ditched TiVo so its not even an option anymore. If you like TiVo dont get DTV.
I have been through 2 boxes and they have both been broken or inherently poor quality. The problem is that you cannot just perform a hard reset and see if that fixes the problem. If you do a hard reset, I mean to completely reset the box and go back to factory, someone like me now has to manually reprogram 50 season passes which takes forever using a remote control to type with. This is an unacceptable troubleshooting step even though it has been suggested to me every time I call.
I have been living with the second box for 3 months now. The caller ID (neat idea) does not work. It says there is someone calling when there is not, so I disabled it. I cannot skip forward 30 seconds. At least with TiVo I could skip 15 min without a hack. It does not skip back slightly when resuming. This means that I usually try to fly thru the commercials only to overshoot the program resuming just in time to see the butler do it and miss the cliffhanger. The only solution to this is to fast forward-slowly (did I just say that?) so that you can stop in time and then jump back just a few seconds EVERY TIME. You can only have 50 season passes. You can only program 100 events in a given period of time (sounds like a lot but its not, and TiVo can do it).
I just bought an HDTV so this box is going back anyway. I screwed DTV into giving me an HDTV HR20 box and dish for free and 6 months of full programming for nothing so I'll post to that product when I find out how it works (or doesnt work for that matter).
