Pros easy to use great hd picture
Cons none at this time
Summary i great unit direct tv did a great job i had tivo fo years and i had to get use to the new set up i want to tell people give it time this a great unit
Pros Cool flashing lights
Cons slow, buggy, feauture poor, not state of the art
Summary Compared to my last DVR obtained from Direct TV (Hughes) This model has such a poor interface that it is painful to use. The remote (your main interface with the system) is heavy, clunky, and does not interface with my mainstream stereo receiver. Fast-forward feature does not anticipate human reaction time like the Hughes model did, bringing me back to the days of fast forwarding my VCR. Switching between channels using the Previous Channel feature takes full seconds, having to manually turn a switch to control different components leads to confusion. The instruction manual in several places instructs you to press the menu button twice to get to your recorded programming... Why not design it to be pressed just once? Prone to crashes, my first unit came with the HDMI ports inoperative. Did I mention that it doesn't support 1080p?
Pros Delivers a stellar picture
Cons Cannot be relied upon
Summary The Dirctv HR20 delivers an incredible picture. My 42" Plasma tv rose to its full potential while receiving the signal. This picture with surround sound made my actual presense at sporting events more of an inconvenience than a privilege.
However, it was also unreliable. It did not record shows I had set. I missed the first two hours of 24 because, while it said it was recording and even showed that it had recorded the program, it would not play. Often, the thing wouldn't even come on. I had to unplug it often to reboot just to get it to come on. I called Directv so many times they eventually sent me another HR20 which did not perform any better than the first. Upgrades came so often is was evident they knew they had put an inferior product on the market. When I called I heard the same line frequently, "You know, this is new technology." If I hadn't heard the very same words I might have thought this was a sincere explanation rather than a line which had been given to the employees to try and soothe the customers.
Yes, it is new technology but I also got a TiVo when it was new technology and both of my TiVo's worked from the beginning.
I finally called Dirctv and gave them my two options: Tell me how much I owe you if I just drop my service and go to cable or let me send this thing back to you and I remain a Directv customer. They chose the latter.
I recommend you wait until Directv works out the bugs in its system before purchasing any of their "new technology."
Pros awesome picture
Cons The constant freezing
Summary It's nice, pictures perfect, but there are the flaws. One in which is when it freezes thats the worse, when you go to delete a show and then all of the sudden it freezes, thats agrivating, becuase then you have to reboot the whole system. I think they need to come out with a hd dvr 2.0, something that will have 3 tuners because for me 2 is sometimes not enough. Then it should have more hardive space, and it needs to record a show when you tell it to becuase sometimes mine doesn't record when i tell it to, and it needs to not freeze so much!!
Pros I guess is does work sometimes.
Cons Crashes daily, DVR controls are sub par when compared to Tivo.
Summary I'm not going to rehash the tech review here. The bottom line on this box is DON'T BUY IT. The box crashes regularly if left on an HD channel. The only fix is a 15 minute restart of the DVR. Also, the control of the DVR does not work in the same league as the Tivo I replaced with this box. There is no anticipation of where you meant to stop when using the fast forward or reverse functions. This makes it VERY difficult to stop the playback at the actual point you want to stop it. I have dealt with the Directv helpline about these issues and have installed the current updates to the box, but still have the problems. I am going to call this $300 I wasted on this box a lost cause and go out and get the $800 Tivo equivilant. Yes, its really that bad.
