"DirecTV did great at putting crap in a silver case!!!"0.5 starson by burtondiddy31
Pros: I could list a few - but I had Dish Network, and this thing has no pros when compared to the Dish products.
Cons: Everything - I'm limited to 250 characters. Black screen freeze-ups, dropped video, poor flexibility for recording - if it's crap, this has it.
Summary: The first HD DVR that DirecTV gave me when I signed up was supposed to be a brand new unit. After five months of use, it stopped responding to commands from the remote. I tried the remotes from other receivers, and it didn't work. I tried the DVR remote on my other recievers, and it worked fine. So I called DirecTV, explained the situation, and they insisted on sending me a new remote - even though I told them this wasn't the issue. Angered, I called them back the next day, and they said they couldn't assist me further until I tried the new remote. So three days later, I got the remote - and it didn't work. So after calling and complaining, they sent me another "brand new" receiver. I got a refurbished unit, that, after pulling the current receiver I have out of the cabinet, turned out to be older than the refurbished POS receiver I was initially given as a "brand new" unit.
This receiver has the same issues - black screen freeze, intermittent non-rsponsiveness to the remote - it's just a piece of crap. Period. It misses probably 10% of ths shows I've set it up to record (and no, there are no conflicting programs set to record - it just doesn't pick them up).
I switched from Dish Network because this had some of the programming that my wife enjoyed (no longer on), and it had more HD content than Dish had at the time. However, the receiver is junk compared to the VIP 722. It doesn't fast forward very fast at all. It doesn't have the recording reliability that the Dish unit has. You have to run two wires to the back of the unit, and attach two big diffusers so you can get your HD content (which the morons that installed the system did not hook up, or leave to be hooked up - had to wait for those to be mailed too). It locks up constantly.
I'm without my DirecTV service right now, because I'm reformatting my hard drive - AGAIN. I pay $80 a month for this service, and have LOVED having to reformat the hard drive because DirecTV can't get it right. I've lost the recordings that I got this service for FIVE TIMES because this thing is such a piece of crap.
I'm in the process of moving - but once moved, I will definitely be paying the cancellation fee to get rid of this service to go back to Dish.
